In Sierra Leone, Today is International Human Rights Day
In collaboration with West Africa Human Rights Committee and UNIPSIL, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) will today 10th December 2010 celebrate the International Human Rights Day with the theme “Human Rights Defenders Who Act to End Discrimination”. The ceremony will be held at the National Stadium Hostel in Freetown. The Acting Chairperson of Human Rights Commission (HRCSL) Mrs. Yasmin Jusu Sheriff in an interview said the commission in Sierra Leone joins other countries all over the world to celebrate Human Rights Day.

In Sierra Leone, Youth Leader Excels in Dakar
Coordinator of Youth Alliance for Peace and Development (YAPAD), Bockarie Ensah, has returned from Dakar, Senegal, after successfully representing Sierra Leone at the Alumni Enrichment Conference. At the conference hosted in Dakar from 30th November 2010 to the 2nd December 2010, the revered youth activist presented a brilliant paper on the topic: “Gender Issues and their Relations to Politics”. Ensah left the shores of Sierra Leone on the 28th November 2010 to participate in the conference that attracted participants from various countries, and returned home on 5th December 2010.

Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC), Boss Denies Resignation Rumour
Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC), Elvis Gbanabom Hallowell, has vehemently denied rumours that he has resigned his position. Like bush fire in the harmattan, it was all over Freetown in particular and the world at large through the facebook social network that the SLBC DG tendered his resignation following a rift between him on one hand and the institution’s board on the other hand. However, the DG has confirmed that there was no rift between him and the board as widely rumored.

PCL International, an IT business institution in Sierra Leone, has won the 2010 Microsoft Country Partner of the Year Award for Sierra Leone. This disclosure was made at a press conference held on Wednesday 8th December 2010 at the SLAJ Headquarters conference hall in Freetown. “The company was chosen out of an international field of top Microsoft partners as delivering market-leading customer solutions built on Microsoft technology,” Chief Executive Officer of PCL International, Mr. Oluwole Austin Pratt told newsmen, adding:

Sudden Death Hits CORD Sierra Leone
Executive Director of CORD Sierra Leone, Dr. Alfred A. Sandy, 58, on Wednesday 8th December 2010 died in Freetown. The late man was on his way to work when he suddenly fell ill and all efforts to save his life proved fruitless. CORD Sierra Leone Finance Officer told the Awareness Times that Dr. Sandy left the office at about 5:30pm on Tuesday 7th December 2010, looking healthy, whilst describing the loss as irreparable.

PMDC Heads Political Parties Association
Young Generation Youth Leader of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), Ishmael Bangura, has been duly elected President of the first executive for the All Political Parties Youth Association (APPYA). This happened on Saturday 5th December 2010 in Makeni during the association’s first delegates’ convention which was graced by President Ernest Bai Koroma, UN officials and other stakeholders. Bangura was nominated by the out-gone interim president of the association cum Young Generation Leader of the SLPP, Malaam Janneh.

In Sierra Leone, Midwives Trained to Save Lives
Midwives, otherwise known as maternal and child health aides (MCHAIDES), have vowed to make maternal and infant mortality a thing of the past. This was done during a two days training workshop organized by ADDO-CARITAS in Serabu Town, Bompeh Chiefdom, Bo District, over the weekend. With support from the European Union, the training was aimed at empowering the participants on the use of ‘pantographs’ for pregnant women and to refresh their minds on care before and after delivery.

In Sierra Leone, Kailahun Gets First Class Hotel
In Torpkombu section of Kailahun town on Bendu Road imposingly stands the Luawa Resort Hotel, built by an illustrious son of the soil, Maya Kaikai. Perched on a piece of high ground overlooking the war-ravaged town, the plush facility is situated 34 miles from the international market at Koindu, 17 miles from Bendu and 2 and 7 miles respectively from the two pristine beaches on the Guinean border. The project started in December last year and is expected to be completed next month when the hotel will be formally opened although it is already in use.

In Sierra Leone, Central Prison Escapees Arrested
A Police Inspector attached to the Central Police Division has apprehended two notorious criminals who fled the central prisons on Sunday 5th December 2010. Inspector Samuel Kamara intercepted and arrested Mohamed Conteh and Junior Koroma in a minibus that was heading for Waterloo on Tuesday 7th December 2010 at about 6pm. Inspector Kamara told the Awareness Times that he was on his way home after work when the two fugitives flagged down the vehicle at a place called Poyo Bar, Calabatown, far east of Freetown.
