SLPP Aspirant Kadie Johnson-Cole Dragged to Court
One of the SLPP Flagbearer aspirants, Madam Kadie Johnson-Cole has appeared in Court No.1 before Magistrate Steven Conteh on Thursday 2nd December, 2010 to answer to five-count charges including Wounding with Intent, Assault occasioning in bodily harm, Resisting Police arrest and Disorderly behaviour. According to the particulars of offence, the accused recently at No.7 Madongo Town at Congo Cross in Western Freetown allegedly assaulted and wounded a woman police officer who was trying to bring in Kadi Johnson-Cole following complaint filed against Johnson-Cole by a member of her husband’s family who alleged that Kadie Johnson-Cole had broken into the family residence and stolen items belonging to the Johnson-Cole household.

Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), Commissions New Pilot Boat
Thursday last week marked yet another memorable day at the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), Government Warf in Freetown when the Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Ibrahim Kargbo deputized His Excellency, President Ernest Bai Koroma to commission a new pilot boat for the Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA). It turned out to be a dual role played by the minister as he was also opportuned to commission Maritime Administration’s Search and Rescue Boat. SLPA’s new acquisition, M.V Rokel is ‘the beginning of re-branding the Authority,’ so noted the General Manager, Benjamin O Davis.

In Sierra Leone, Government Launches ‘Business Bomba’ II
The second phase of the Business Bomba plan Competition geared towards enhancing entrepreneurship and fostering a conducive business climate in Sierra Leone was on Friday 3rd December, 2010 launched by the Minister of Trade and Industry, David Carew at the Youyi Building in Freetown. This is a collaborative initiative by the Government of Sierra Leone, UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). The competition is being organized by AFFORD-Sierra Leone.

In Sierra Leone, Nupha Partners With World Vision, Restless Development/Spw And Bdc To Commemorate World Aids Day
The Njala University Public Health Association (NUPHA) last Wednesday partnered with the international charities Restless Development/SPW, World Vision and the Bo District HIV/AIDS Committee to stage a symposium in commemoration of this year’s World’s AIDS Day on December at the School of Community Health Sciences Korwama Campus in the southern city of Bo. The symposium drew hundreds of observers, participants and guest speakers including the Base Manager of World Vision Mr. A Kwademoi, representatives of Network for People with HIV/AIDS, Plan Parenthood Association Sierra Leone (PPASL), Bo District Council etc.

In Sierra Leone, Transformation Education Donates Cabinets to Schools
Transformation Education, a non-profit making Christian-based organization operating under the aegis of World Hope International, has donated cabinets, steel doors and windows, to 12 pilot primary schools within the Freetown municipality. Handing over the items to the beneficiary schools during a conducted tour, the Director of Transformation Education, American-born Gwen Smith, informed that the donation was made possible courtesy of a grant from the Davis Project for Peace.

In Sierra Leone, Officer Unveils Human Rights’ Day Agenda
The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRC-SL) and its partners have lined up series of activities to celebrate the International Human Right Day from December 7th to 11th 2010. This was recently revealed in an interview with the Assistant Western Region Human Rights Officer, Mr. Ishmael Bayoh at their Wellington Street Office in Freetown. The programme, he noted will start with a symposium at the YWCA New Hall, to be followed by a drama competition at the British Council Auditorium. After those activities, Mr. Bayoh informed that there will be a ‘Best Speaker’s contest at the same British Council to be followed by a football match and a float parade. He said the occasion will be climaxed on December 10 by an official function at the National Stadium.

SLPP Returns to Parliament
Members of Parliament (MPs) representing the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have returned to the House of Parliament following their walkout on November 22 2010 in protest of the refusal of the government to denounce violent attacks against their party members, supporters and offices in Kono. The protest ended in the wake of a press statement issued by the Office of the President condemning the violent attacks.

Political Parties, Police Plot Against Violence
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), the National Electoral Commission (NEC), and the four major political parties in the country – SLPP, APC, NDA and PMDC – have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections in the forthcoming bye-elections in Kono, Kambia and Tonkolili. The agreement containing basic rules for effective policing of the aforesaid local government bye-election slated for 11th December 2010 was signed at the conference hall of the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters in Freetown on Thursday 2nd December 2010.

In Sierra Leone, Africell Launches Christmas Bonanza
One of the leading telecommunication companies in Sierra Leone, Africell Lintel, has launched a bonanza dubbed: “Africell Christmas Show”. The launch took place on Thursday 2nd December 2010 at the Country Lodge Auditorium, Hill Station in Freetown. Africell’s Managing Director, Mr. Robert El-Khaury recalled that his company celebrated the month of Ramadan with subscribers in its ‘Treasure Hunt’ promotion. “Thousands of our valued subscribers participated in that promotion and won themselves various goodies,” he said.
