In Sierra Leone, Magistrate Blames Local Gov’t Ministry for Chiefs’ Misbehaviour
Magistrate Bankole Shyllon of Court No. 3 on Tuesday 23rd November, 2010 came down heavily on tribal chiefs in the western area for extortionist tendencies. He registered his disgust for those chiefs who are in the habit of suffering poor people. “Most of chiefs in the western area are just eating free money without the Local Government Ministry monitoring their operations,” he advanced, adding that the ministry is only concerned with crowing the chiefs and go away without explaining to them their roles as chiefs in their respective communities. Magistrate Shyllon made this public chastisement in court with regards a matter currently before him against the Mabayla Wharf Chief for levying the unprecedented fine of Le 730,000 on one Aminata Conteh for quarrelling with her neighbour.

In Sierra Leone, President Koroma Opens WAICA Conference
President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma, who is known as a renowned insurer, on Monday 22nd November 2010, officially opened a four day education conference organized by the West African Insurance Company Association (WAICA). The conference, which is ongoing at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex, Kingtom in Freetown, has as it theme: “Globalization and its effect on the West Africa Insurance Industry”.

In Sierra Leone, Classdiving & Ports Authority to Modernize Sierra Leone Harbour
In order to enhance trust and attract more businessmen, vessels and investors in Sierra Leone, Classdiving, a marine consulting and survey company has collaborated with the Sierra Leone Ports Authority to modernize the Sierra Leone Harbour to an international standard. To achieve this goal, MV Combi Dock 1, a sub-marine ship with a length of 165 meter and 25 meter width, on Sunday docked at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay with a big dredge, Dirk Martens Combi Lift from Demark through the OBT Shipping Company to start operation in Sierra Leone.

Members of Parliament representing the All People’s Congress (APC) party have called for the suspension of their colleague parliamentarians representing the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). In the well of parliament on Tuesday 23rd November 2010, the APC parliamentarians insisted that the decision of the SLPP MPs to stage a walkout, thus boycotting the debate on the 2011 Appropriation Bill, was contemptuous and should be of concern to parliament.

Volunteer Involving Organization Network (VIONET) in collaboration with other stakeholders on Thursday simultaneously organized a workshop on the forthcoming International Volunteer Day and launched the 10th anniversary of the international year of volunteers at NaCSA Head Office in Freetown. In attendance at the ceremony were a host of personalities representing various agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, UNDP, NMJD and civil society organizations among others.

The participants were drawn from the four regions in the country.

SLPP MPs Boycott Budget Debate
Sequel to an earlier executive decision, Members of Parliament of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) yesterday Monday 22nd November, 2010 refused to be part of the ongoing debate on the Appropriation Bill by staging a decisive walkout from the well of parliament. This translation of a party executive decision was in protest of the APC led government’s failure of adhering to SLPP’s demand to identify and bring to book perpetrators of the dastard and ruthless attacks against the party membership in Kono recently by hooligans believed to be APC operatives.
