APC Terrorizes Journalists
Cabinet Ministers in the All People’s Congress (APC) led government have been terrorizing journalists for the past one week. A total of six journalists were arrested and detained in police cells on the orders of the Minister of Lands, Allieu Pat-Sowe and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Joseph Sam Sesay. It all started on Monday 13th December 2010 when Minister Pat-Sowe ordered the arrest and detention of four independent newspaper journalists. As if that was the start of a war on journalists, Agriculture Minister Joseph Sam Sesay followed his colleague’s trend on Thursday 16th December 2010 by ordering the arrest of two radio journalists in Bo, southern Sierra Leone.

Following a successful nationwide tour… Alpha Wurie Completes 50m Payment
One of the leading aspirants in the flagbearer contest of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Dr. Alpha Wurie, has completed his fifty million leones (Le50,000,000) registration payment to the party’s national executive at an auspicious occasion held at the Wallace Johnson Street Headquarters of the party on Friday 17th December 2010. As the December 31st deadline draws near, Dr. Alpha Wurie is the seventh, out of the twenty three aspirants who had earlier paid the initial ten million leones (Le10,000,000), to complete his payment.

In Sierra Leone, TBAs Wage War Against Maternal Deaths
In an effort to reduce the high infant and maternal mortality in the country, UNFPA in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and Social Welfare have supported Traditional Births Attendants (TBAs) in all fifteen chiefdoms in Bo district to embark on massive advocacy on the need for pregnant women to deliver in hospitals and the need for TBA’S to do all deliveries in hospitals together with a train and qualified mid-wife. The campaign also looked at gender based violence, HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, early initiation of girls into the Bondo society amongst others. The campaign was organized simultaneously in all fifteen chiefdoms by the TBA’S and partners, who were all dedicated and committed to the objectives of the campaign .Over one hundred TBAs took part in the campaign and community meetings, village–to-village outreach and traditional drama formed part of the programmes throughout the fifteen chiefdoms. The chiefdoms include Kakua, Baoma, Valunia, Bagbo, Lugbu, Gbo and Selenga.

In Sierra Leone, Gomna’s Children Launches This Week
An educative novel titled Gomna’s Children would be launched in Freetown on Wednesday 22nd December 2010. The novel which was drafted to reflect the history of Sierra Leone is authored by a proud son of Sierra Leone known as Siaka Kroma. He was educated in Sierra Leone, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of America. Siaka Kroma, based in Nairobi Kenya, is already in town to launch the book that will help Sierra Leoneans and the world at large understand the history of Sierra Leone, especially during the colonial era and the participation of Sierra Leone in the Second World War.

In Sierra Leone, One Killed in Gun Attack
Unidentified gunmen have killed a female resident of College Road, Congo Cross in Freetown. Yealie Kargbo was shot dead following a deadly attack launched at her residence in the early hours of Friday 17th December 2010. Sinneh, the husband of Yealie also received a bullet wound and doctors at the Connaught Hospital are still fighting to save his life. The corpse of Yealie, which were left in a pool of blood, was later convened to the Mortuary. The Congo Cross Police Division has arrested a suspect known as White Boy who was reportedly nabbed with a knife and traces of blood stain on his body.

In Sierra Leone, FFS/ABC Holds First Farmers’ AGM
An umbrella organization of farmers’ associations in Sierra Leone, Farmers Feed Schools and Agricultural Business Centers (FFS/ABC) on Saturday 11th December, 2010 brought together farmers’ representatives from across the country to participate in the organization’s first Annual General Meeting since its inception in 2002. The day-long meeting took place at the Las Vegas Hall, Makeni city. The essence of the forum was to critically examine past activities of the organization with the view to identifying challenges and to map out strategies for a way forward for the new farming season.

SLPP Campaign Heats Up
Aspirants in the flagbearer contest of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) are bracing up for the party’s forthcoming delegates’ conference slated for March 5, 2011 in Freetown. In Sierra Leone, Police, Religious Leaders Unite Against Violence
The Ross Road Police Division and the Masjid Tawheed Wa-Sunnah have jointly held a day’s seminar against acts of violence, anti-social behaviors, cultism, gangsterism, cliques, and drug abuse among youths.
