Criminal Libel Laws will stay unless…
In the United Kingdom, technology, educational standards and modernization are far advanced as compared to Sierra Leone. In the United Kingdom, the levels of illiteracy are virtually non-existent and so it would NOT be easy for a journalist to whip up undue or unwarranted public resentment against an individual; resentment that might subject that individual to extreme danger. It will not be easy because the vast majority of the U.K. public are educated enough to analyze their current issues. This has been the case for at least a hundred years now in the United Kingdom.

SLPP Women Without Liz Lavalie & Bernadette Lahai?
Last weekend, one of my reporters covered a Sensitisation Workshop on the Gender Policy drafted by the dynamic Women’s Leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party, Madam Isatu Jabbie ‘IJ’ Kabbah. From my reporter’s notes submitted, I gather that the United Nations sponsored programme went quite well and many lofty words were spoken by women present like my own dear adopted Aunty, Dr. Kadi Sesay whom I am told was present there not on a cheap publicity stunt to enhance her so-called ‘leading’ SLPP Flagbearer chances but as the ‘Deputy SLPP Chairman’. If you are confused, well ask those who see nothing unethical in Dr. Kadi Sesay’s two hats she wears at the same time! Anyway, more on that later…

WHY SOUTH AFRICA CAN WIN NATIONS CUP 2012
I am dedicating this article to all my friends in the Windy Friendly City of Port Elizabeth for the persistent reminder given to them of South Africa’s historic achievement of being the first Nation to fail in the group stages. It’s my final day and will be moving to the Summer Summer City of Durban (derived from the wonderful weather they have through the year…summer always. I will miss Port Elizabeth and in particular Nelson Mandela Bay where the Great Madiba was born. It’s been good fun and the stadium is arguably the best design of all World Cup stadiums.

WHY BLATTER MUST BE CAREFUL
Since the woeful and embarrassing performance of some teams in the World Cup, notably France and Nigeria, their Government have been quick to order an investigation into the causes and in the case of Nigeria, the team has been suspended for two years from International Competition which implies out of the 2012 and 2013 African Nations Cup. As a Football Administrator since 1986 in Sierra Leone, and a contender for the next FA Presidency in 2012, I must categorically state that I am opposed to Government’s interference in most cases but unlike FIFA, I do not believe Zero Tolerance is practicable, and support Government’s involvement, not necessarily interference in certain scenarios.

Mr President Please Protect My Citizenship Rights
In the last several months, those of us that are Sierra Leoneans of Caucasian (white) Skin have been shocked, embarrassed and discouraged by an Immigration Policy demanding we seek clearance as Sierra Leoneans before traveling with our Passports. I have been forced to write this article by virtue of the embarrassment I faced on my way to South Africa to watch the World Cup matches in the company of Mr Sanusi Bruski Kargbo, Lions Vice Chairman, on Sunday 20th June 2010.

Reflecting On South Africa 2010 World Cup
It is by now public knowledge that South Africa 2010 is the first time Sierra Leone has been officially represented by Sports Writers. It is also a truism that it is the first time we have been allocated World Cup tickets officially that has been available for Sierra Leoneans to witness the World Cup. Regrettably, many of our brothers intending to travel to the Competition struggled with either Visa or flight/accommodation difficulties from home to The Rainbow Nation. It has not been all doom and gloom because at least three sports journalists have had the opportunities to watch the best footballers in the world, observe how press conferences are held and learn from others from a more advance world how efficient and professional Sports Writers and Photographers can be.

Sheka Tarawallie has no regrets for embarrassing President Koroma & Sierra Leone
The utterances of the Press Secretary of President Ernest Bai Koroma clearly indicate that Sheka Tarawallie has no regrets for embarrassing President Koroma and the Government of Sierra Leone to the international community. After subjecting President Koroma to ridicule in the eyes of the world, especially the United Nations, the Presidential Press Secretary sees nothing wrong in what he has done and has embarked on adding more salt to the injury he had earlier caused.

Petrol Price all set to Increase ...as Economics supercedes Politics
The Minister of Trade & Industry, David Omatshola Carew has told this writer last evening June 20th 2010 in an exclusive interview that "a political decision" had been finally taken to stop Government subsidies on petroleum products thus leading to an impending increase in the price of fuel at the pump. David Carew said this had been indicated in the Budget Speech of Finance Minister Dr. Samura Kamara for this year when he had stated that come June 30th 2010, there will be no more subsidies on petroleum products. The Trade Minister however evaded to confirm or deny whether the said increase would take place today as was being speculated last evening. Elaborating on the proposed increase, Minister Carew explained that there was a formula long since established by which the price of petroleum products in-country is determined. He explained that the factors affecting the pump price includes the foreign exchange rate and what he described as "Platt" alongside other factors.

Misguided Military/Police Actions Deserve Outright Condemnation!...As they send worrying signals
The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC) Tuesday June 15 2010, reported that a joint team of armed military and police personnel raided a village in the Moyamba District situated in the south of the country, over rumours that Kamajor militias were being recruited and trained there. Onboard military and police trucks and obviously in a warlike mood, the personnel numbering close to 100, ransacked the entire village in search of the training base, suspected recruits and whoever was behind the unlawful act.

If Only Adults Can Stop Misleading Children on June 16
June 16th is a day recorded as one of Africa's most sympathetic days. It is a memorable day in which all Africans especially children are to be encouraged to mourn and offer countless prayers for the thousands of black school children who were killed and injured by police personnel during a very peaceful student protest march in Soweto, South Africa in 1976. The students were protesting the inferior quality of their education and also in demand of their rights to be taught in their own language.

Awareness Times is Awareness Times and SLPP is SLPP
Finally, we have absolutely no 2012 Presidential aspirant we are endorsing as a newspaper. Neither do I have any personal favourite amongst SLPP aspirants. Lawyer Alpha Timbo, like all the other candidates, is free to use any of my staff reporters like Bampia Bundu, to cover campaign activities. It should not be translated into endorsement for Alpha Timbo. I have not endorsed Alpha Timbo nor have I endorsed any APC, PMDC or SLPP aspirant and neither has Awareness Times newspaper got any aspirant we favour.

Parleying with Government - Good Initiative in Sierra Leone!
I confess I was not enthusiastic when I first heard about it. This Government is so used to carrying out gimmicks and tricks on the innocent populace that I was sceptical. However, listening and watching last Saturday June 12th 2010’s Live Programme as it was well handled by H.E. President Ernest Koroma, Hon. Speaker Abel Stronge and Hon. Chief Justice Umu Hawa Tejan-Jalloh, I really have nothing to say except to heartily congratulate the Government for the good initiative of bringing ordinary citizens from all over the country to meet and ask questions of Heads of the three arms of Governments.

Sierra Leone’s President & the Overt Denigration of his Womenfolk
The Foreign Minister Zainab Hawa Bangura sees nothing wrong with the foreign relations debacle of such a dastardly move she openly gives her blessings to. Manufacturing nonsense against a very senior Liberian Government official simply to get back at a Sierra Leonean female critic is probably seen as a responsible act by this Government of Sierra Leone we are now living under! This Government of President Koroma sees nothing wrong with this dastardly move because the Government includes persons like Zainab Hawa Bangura. Poignantly though, the woman that President Koroma has given us as Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister simply does not respect herself so how can she be expected to respect other women? This is President Koroma’s Government for you! This is what we are living with in Sierra Leone today. Filthy panties on a stick and nastiness spread on to the Internet right from within the corridors of power... CLICK ABOVE LINK TO READ MORE.

Difference between APC & SLPP in Sierra Leone
The SLPP, during the last 2002-2007 Parliament, had a huge majority of some 70% however the SLPP’s President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, being the true democrat that he was, always consulted with the minority APC party despite such a huge majority. Not only did he involve deeply alloyed APC stalwarts like current President Koroma in his Governance of the country (e.g: NASSIT) but he showed immense sensitivity to their views. For President Kabbah as leader of the then ruling SLPP, it was not a case of ‘Minority will have their say whilst Majority will have their way’ but always one of respectful consultations.

How Not To Help Schulenburg
This newspaper has seen a misguided attempt by Lans Gberie to help launder the dwindling image of UN’s SRSG Von der Schulenburg who is perceived amongst a section of his UN staff as a dictator with what they perceive to be appropriate nicknames of Hitler!, Stalin! The Russian!, The German! and/or Mike Tyson assigned to him because of his terrorising manner of acting towards them. It is unfortunate that Lans Gberie who shares the exact same birthday (November 29) as John Benjamin, could try to erroneously psycho-analyse Mr. Benjamin as means of doing what he believes is helping Schulenburg. How Sad!

A Liar is always Inconsistent
When I was a kid my late grandmother, during our story telling moments every Saturday night, used to tell me that me that ‘lie man always dae change mot’, translated in English to be ‘a liar is always inconsistent in his words’. Readers might be wondering why memories of my late grandma triggers my mind now when dozens of years have slowly gone by since the demise of my old ma. The reason is that since she told me these words, I have actually be coming across liars but not as those big liars operating a certain ragsheet all in the guise of running a newspaper.

The Bush Leopard is Here!
It was seen as a means of burnishing and promoting the credentials of President Koroma in the international arena. Foreign Minister Zainab Hawa Bangura, who has now been named as being one of those who inspected the ‘Baa Nya Fakei’ NASSIT ferries before they were corruptly mal-purchased went along with Mike ‘Tyson’ Schulenburg to the UN in New York to happily announce regime’s ‘sacred cow’ was charged for corruption. The sacred cow (aka Haja Afsatu Kabba) vehemently protested her innocence but it was drowned out in the cacophony of burnishing Mr. President’s image. Now, the allegations have taken a strange twist.

MY PROFOUND APOLOGIES TO SYLVIA BLYDEN IN SIERRA LEONE
Sylvia Blyden who knows how affectionately I regard her has called my attention in her own special style that she was not the author of the article that compared Michael Von Schulenburg to the terrible Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. She merely reported what others had said and therefore has demanded an apology from her adopted uncle Puawui. Sylvia I am sorry that I attributed the comparison to you and I do sincerely apologise. I am convinced that no matter how much you may disagree with Schulenburg’s way of operating, and being aware of who Adolf Hitler was, you would not compare the two men. Once again I offer you my apology.

Schulenburg's current Problem in Sierra Leone is his Dictatorial Acts towards his Staff
All what we have done here is to report a very serious issue that amongst UN staff in Sierra Leone, there is so much bad blood that nicknames have been given to Mr. Schulenburg by his own senior UN staff to mark his DICTATORIAL tendencies. Schulenburg has been nicknamed after the German Dictator Hitler, after the Russian Dictator Stalin and also called a Mike Tyson because he actually went physical on a senior UN staff member for which UN Headquarters in New York is sending a team in the next few days to investigate why such an incident happened at the UN mission in Sierra Leone.
