The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, in collaboration with Sierra Leone Navy, has made series of arrests of fishing vessels for violations of conservation measures under the 1994 Fisheries Management and Development Act. In addition to the fines imposed for these violations, section 73, subsections (1) and (2) made provision for the disposal of confiscated goods that are deemed perishable and these include fish and fish products.

L.A, W.Y.E.R.S note with grave concern the alleged raping of 12 year old girl in Kono on 3rd March 2010 by a 52 year old man. It is alleged that the rape of the said girl ultimately led to her death. We commend the Sierra Leone Police, the Family Support Unit and all concerned for their speedy action in investigating and charging this matter to court. L.A, W.Y.E.R.S also notes with concern that the incidence of rape and sexual violence in the country has risen dramatically since the end of the civil war. We consider this an issue of grave national concern.

Makeni & Port Loko, 7th March 2010 –War Child developed children’s radio programs with the local children’s organizations ‘Kids Arise’, ‘Child Forum Network’, ‘Child Empowerment Forum Network’ and ‘Media Student Network’ to celebrate the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting. War Child helped these organizations to develop radio programs for the local radio stations in Bombali and Port Loko.
