Statement by Edward Sam, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone, on the presentation of the State of Human Rights in Sierra Leone 2009 Report, to HE President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on 3rd August, 2010
Your Excellency, soon after my colleague Commissioners and I took Oath of Office in December 2006, we made a public commitment that we would produce our first State of Human Rights Report as required by the law establishing the Commission. Almost four years have passed since then and much has occurred in the life of the HRCSL and the nation and I am happy to recall that we did live up to that promise. It is therefore with great pride and pleasure that we, members and staff of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone stand before you, once again to present what is now our third annual State of Human Rights in Sierra Leone Report.

A Tribute to Sierra Leone's "Papa Jacques"
In Port au Prince, a few weeks after the earthquake, on a side street next to the collapsed presidential palace, a squat man wearing a fishing vest, a floppy hat, and a scowl, patrolled the crowd. He looked like a grandfatherly trout fisherman, who hadn’t caught anything in a while. This was the Champ de Mars neighborhood where Haitians were known to bum rush humanitarian workers and throw rocks at police. But this man wasn’t afraid of going into the belly of the beast, which was a little strange given that he was a 60-something Frenchman with a curious British accent and a slight hitch in his walk.

SLAJ Denounces Rude Zenith Bank Managing Director; Calls for her Recall Press Release
Freetown – The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists hereby denounces in the strongest of terms the despicably rude behaviour of the Managing Director of Zenith Bank Sierra Leone, Oby Ikeh Unekwe to a journalist who simply called her to fact-check her story. Today SLAJ received a complaint from journalist Kadijatu Savage (Mrs) accompanied by an audio CD containing a voice believed to be that of Madam Unekwe in which she insults the journalist calling her “a thief, a cheap slut and a bastard”.

RESPONSE TO INNUENDOS DIRECTED AT THE KADI SESAY CAMPAIGN IN RESPECT OF CERTAIN PUBLICATIONS
Over the past ten days the Elect Kadi Sesay Campaign Team has closely followed publications on the internet and in local tabloids regarding an SLPP delegate opinion poll emanating from a controversial source. Particularly, our team woke up to the statement that ... “certain candidates for the SLPP flag–bearer position are getting desperate and have started engaging in unsavory tactics to raise their visibility”. The July 14, 2010 edition of Awareness Times newspaper was categorical that “unscrupulous supporters of Kadi Sesay” were the source of the suspect delegate opinion poll.

Sierra Leone Association of Journalists
Freetown – In what has been described by the SLAJ President, Umaru Fofana as “the right call at the right time for the right thing to be done”, the Sierra Leone Bar Association has called on the Government of Sierra Leone to abolish Criminal Libel Law from the country’s law books. The call is contained in a list of resolutions adopted at the 2-day annual congress of the Bar Association, which says the law contained in the 1965 Public Order Act is “outmoded…and copied from the United Kingdom, which…finally abolished the repugnant provisions” in 2009.

ALL OUR AFRICAN LEADERS SHOULD LEARN FROM ASAMOAH GYAN’S PENALTY MISS AT THE FIFA 2010
Ghanaian player Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss in the dying seconds of extra time against Uruguay on Friday cost the African side a place in the World Cup semi-finals and broke hearts across the continent. The event of that day triggered a series of reactions such as an invitation from Nelson Mandela, father of the African continent entertaining Black Stars team to dinner and soccer fans around the globe calling Luis Suarez’s action as unsportsmanlike. But what truly caught my attention and triggered my pen to write was the reaction from African leaders like Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (Liberia), Ernest Bai Koroma (Sierra Leone), John Atta Mills (Ghana), Blaise Campaore (Burkina Faso), Abdoulaye Wade (Senegal) and of course, Jonathan Goodluck of the Great Nigeria as they all mourned such missed golden opportunity for the rest of Africa.

DENNIS SANDY [The Minister of Lands] and two (2) Others, for various offences committed by them between February and March 2010 against Mr. O.J. Cline-Cole and Mrs. Lara Taylor-Pearce [two (2) Private Citizens], including Malicious Damage, Trespass, Intimidation and Defamatory Libel, contrary to the Malicious Damage Act 1861, and The Public Order Act No.46 of 1965.
