Tom Nyuma Apologizes to Plan Sierra Leone
The confused Chairman of the Kailahun District Council, Tom Nyuma has swallowed his words and apologized to Plan Sierra Leone for wrongly including their name in his shameful attempt to defend lies as published in a Presidential Book and exposed by Awareness Times newspaper. It could be recalled that on the 17th November 2010, Tom Nyumas Kailahun District Council published a paid-for press release (reproduced below on this page) in the pro-APC Torchlight Newspaper in which Nyuma attempted to defend lies that emanated from the APC presidency. The release speaks for itself and has caused many members of the main SLPP opposition party to become even more upset with the actions of Tom Nyuma, a man they had voted into office en masse under the SLPP symbol.

A private member motion demanding that members of parliament representing the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) apologize for staging a walkout from parliament has been endorsed by the Sierra Leone Parliament. The motion was moved on Wednesday 24th November, 2010 by Hon. Ibrahim Bundu of the APC and seconded by Hon. Thomas Mansaray of the PMDC.

In Sierra Leone, Magistrate Blames Local Govt Ministry for Chiefs Misbehaviour
Magistrate Bankole Shyllon of Court No. 3 on Tuesday 23rd November, 2010 came down heavily on tribal chiefs in the western area for extortionist tendencies. He registered his disgust for those chiefs who are in the habit of suffering poor people. Most of chiefs in the western area are just eating free money without the Local Government Ministry monitoring their operations, he advanced, adding that the ministry is only concerned with crowing the chiefs and go away without explaining to them their roles as chiefs in their respective communities. Magistrate Shyllon made this public chastisement in court with regards a matter currently before him against the Mabayla Wharf Chief for levying the unprecedented fine of Le 730,000 on one Aminata Conteh for quarrelling with her neighbour.

To achieve this goal, MV Combi Dock 1, a sub-marine ship with a length of 165 meter and 25 meter width, on Sunday docked at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay with a big dredge, Dirk Martens Combi Lift from Demark through the OBT Shipping Company to start operation in Sierra Leone.

Official campaign for the forthcoming Kono District Council bye-election has commenced in Kono, eastern Sierra Leone, on Monday 22nd November 2010. Kono District Electoral Officer, Momoh M. Kanneh, yesterday told the Awareness Times that the contesting political parties have agreed on NECs campaign calendar. The campaign calendar was arranged and signed by all parties concerned, and it is designed in such a way that the process is free of violence, Kanneh explained.

Airtel is the latest telecommunications brand in Sierra Leone. Replacing the Zain brand, Airtel was launched on Friday 19th November in an auspicious occasion at the Miatta Conference Hall, Youyi Building in Freetown. The new Airtel brand was formally launched by the Chief of Staff, Office of the President, Dr. Kelfala Marrah, and in attendance includes Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Richard Konteh, who represented the Vice President and the NATCOM Boss, Siray Timbo.

In Sierra Leone, Education For All Coalition (EFA-SL) Holds Regional Consultation Ahead of AGM
Education For All Coalition (EFA-SL), a leading civil society movement has concluded a regional consultative conference in preparation for the coalitions 2010 Annual General Meeting. The preparatory forum which brought together stakeholders from both regional and district memberships was held on Friday 17th November held at the Grassroots Gender Empowerment Movement Hall, John Street in Freetown. In his presentation, EFA Coordinator, Mr. Joseph Kobina said the objective of the meeting was among other things to remind members of their obligations that make them eligible for participation in all the coalitions activities, especially in electioneering process at the AGM and to strategize ways of expanding the membership beyond its current size; as well as to bridge existing communication lapses between the coalitions secretariat and the regional/ district networks.

In Sierra Leone, ActionAid ends Out of School Project Workshop in Tonkolili
ActionAid International-Sierra Leone operating in Tonkolili District in collaboration with the District Education Office has concluded a one-day consultative meeting with about fifty (50) key stakeholders from the eleven chiefdoms of the district at the Magburaka Community Centre. Giving an overview of the meeting, ActionAid Tonkolili District Manager, Edward Kanu reiterated the concern for the high rate of children dropping out of school. He said as to the current moment survey has suggested that over three hundred thousand children in Sierra Leone are out of school.

In Sierra Leone, Chief raises alarm over neglect
Pa Alimamy Bockarie Kamara, Section Chief of Fintonia Town, which happens to be the headquarter town of one of the largest chiefdoms in the country, Tambakha, in the Bombali District, is alarmed that the Tambakha Chiefdom has been suffering from what he described as total neglect. Governments have come and gone but none of them seem to recognize our chiefdom as being part of Sierra Leone, the chief said in a recent interview with the Awareness Times.
