In Sierra Leone, Drivers Visit Transport Ministry
Members of the Sierra Leone Professional Drivers’ and general transport workers Union recently met with the Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ransford Hancile to chat the way forward with regards to getting a single union that will seek the welfare of drivers and the general populace. Speaking on behalf of the Sierra Leone Professional Drivers Association (SLPDA), Aruna Conteh aka Ambush Commander, said drivers, both taxi and mini-bus, are suffering with no one to advocate for, and protect them.

In Sierra Leone, Goderich Police Boss Meets Community People
The newly transferred Local Unit Commander (LUC) to the Goderich Police Division, Chief Superintendent Alhaji Gibril Kabba Kamara aka Gallant Police over the weekend conducted a familiarization tour of neighbourhoods under his police jurisdiction, which include the Baw-Baw, York, Sussex, No.2 River, Adonkia and Ogoo Farm communities. The move, described by community elders as a novelty was aimed at acquainting the LUC with the people and the community he has been detailed to protect. The tour also gave the LUC the opportunity to give the community people a gist of his own pattern of policing.

In Sierra Leone, Kenema farmer wins Zain ticket to MAMA
As we wrote in our Thursday edition that Kenema Farmers have braced up for the upcoming Zain MAMA Show, one Lansana M. Kamara has emerged as one of the first ticket winners to watch MTV MAMA Africa Award in Lagos, Nigeria. The farmer, with phone No. 076964208 and an unknown subscriber with 076545335 became the first lucky winners of the ‘Trip to Nigeria’- Zain Change is in the Air’ Promotional draw which was held at the Lumley Beach on Sunday past weekend. The draw was held simultaneously with series of other activities, including a dancing competition, sale of Zain Sim Packs, questions and answers competition and the distribution of Zain items such as mugs, T-Shirts, caps, MP3 and many other items.

In Sierra Leone, IMC to give 32 awards to journalists
The Chairperson of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), Mrs. Bernadette Cole, on Monday 15TH November 2010 told pressmen that there are 32 awards including certificates and trophies to be clinched at this year’s National Media Awards Competition. She made this disclosure at the official launching of the 2010 Awards Ceremony at their Siaka Stevens Street Secretariat in Freetown.

In Sierra Leone, Zain Mama’s Saves Girl Child From Dropping Out Of School
Girl 17 benefited 700,000 from Zain charity offers at the Lumley beach west of Freetown on the 14th November 2010. Hawa Bangura received such money because of her excellent skills in dancing, as she emerged victorious in the side attraction category during the Zain MAMAs mid draw at the Beach Apple Resort. Speaking to her in an interview, she expressed her plans to use the money judiciously in attending her interview at the Government Secondary School King Tom on Monday the 15th November 2010. She thanked her elder brother for informing her about Zain’s activities at Lumley Beach.

In Sierra Leone, TBAs Ends Outreach Campaign in Bombali District
Supported by the UNFPA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affair (MSWGCA), Bombali District Community Advocacy Groups on Saturday 13th November 2010 ended their chiefdoms sensitization campaign targeting six sections in each of the thirteen (13) Chiefdoms in Bombali District. It could be recalled that in September this year, UNFPA, through the Northern Region Office of the MSWGCA conducted training in Makeni city which attracted traditional birth attendants in thirteen chiefdoms in the Bombali District.

The chieftaincy seat in the Sanda Loko Chiefdom, Bombali District, has remained vacant for the past eight (8) years, the Awareness Times has learnt but with the intervention of one Cecilia Bangura, a dynamic female native of the Chiefdom, it now appears that the vacancy will soon be filled. The vacancy resulted because of a long-drawn-out power struggle, which ensued immediately after the death of Paramount Chief Samura Kanu III, eight years ago.

In Sierra Leone, USA Scientists Visit Bunce Island
The Bunce Island Coalition (BIC), a group that advocates for the preservation of one of Sierra Leone’s relics of the Slave Trade, Bunce Island has brought a team of engineers and scientists to commence a five-year project aimed at preserving the historic site. According to the team leader Joseph Opala who spoke to a cross section of the press yesterday 11th November, 2010 at the Tourism Ministry at King Harman Road in Freetown, their mission is to ensure that Bunce Island is preserved of what remains as historical fact which includes brick and stone wall buildings and artifacts such as graves and cannons.

In Sierra Leone, GOSL Prepares Fiber Cable Landing Policy Document
To demonstrate the actualization of the landing of fiber cable in the country through the African Coast to Europe Submarine Cable Project for Sierra Leone Cable Limited, the Government of Sierra Leone has finally succeeded in preparing the Environmental and Social Management and Resettlement Policy Framework document of the West Africa Communications Infrastructure Programme. The preparation of the document came to fruition after several months of consultation with the SAL Consult limited, a Ghanaian registered multidisciplinary water and environmental consultancy based in Accra.

In Sierra Leone, Media Alliance Ends Child Advocacy Session
Over forty participants drawn from local authorities, child protection agencies, including school authorities and government functionaries converged at the Harry Yansaneh Memorial Hall, SLAJ Secretariat, last weekend for a day’s interactive advocacy workshop on the theme: “Promote Children’s Rights to Protect their Future.” The Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Soccoh Kabia, in his keynote address emphasized on the legislations and the welfare and protection of children in terms of education, health and development, pointing out that Media Alliance for Children is key in highlighting and promoting the issues of children to ensure that they are educated and perpetrators of children’s crime are punished.

In Sierra Leone, Soldiers Commence Live Firing Exercise
Over three hundred (300) personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) have commenced a three-day live firing exercise at the Benguema Training School, on Wednesday 10th November 2010. The officers, men and women, were drawn from various regiments across the country, including personnel from the Maritime Wing at Murray Town and Wilberforce. Prior to the commencement of the exercise, the Range Conducting Officer, Captain Musa Gbow, disclosed that the training was to broaden the know-how of soldiers on the proper use of weapons.

In Sierra Leone, Airport GM Debunks News Report
The General Manager of the Sierra Leone Airport Authority (SLAA), Mr. John S A Sesay, has on Tuesday 9th November 2010, debunked newspaper stories that there is serious theft going on at the airport. He referred to such publications as unfounded, as according to him, some journalists are in the habit of publishing one sided stories without getting the other side. In that short press briefing, the manager informed that contrary to what he described as fabricated reports, the Sierra Leone Airport Authority is well protected by securities, and that more stringent mechanisms are being put in place for proper security.
