Jan De Nul Group & Classdiving Set to Upgrade Sierra Leone Ports
In a bid to upgrade the Sierra Leone Queen Elizabeth II Quay to a very standard quay that will accommodate large ships, an under-water construction and Marine Contractor Company ‘Classdiving’ in collaboration with a Belgium based Dredging and Marine Construction Company Jan De Nul Group, have been contracted by the Sierra Leone Government to dig the Queen Elizabeth II Quay jetty to a standard dept. To commence the project, Jan De Nul Group has brought in their dredging vessel named James Cook from Spain which is presently parked at the quay awaiting all necessary arrangement to be completed.

Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) Holds 36th Annual Conference
As part of their commitment to promote health and deliver quality services, the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) on Wednesday 3rd November 2010 started their 36th Annual Conference at the Sierra Leone Bank Complex in Freetown. The conference is being held on the theme: "surveillance of Epidemic prone diseases in Sierra Leone". The Conference which attracted many medical practioners and other stakeholders including government representatives, WHO, UN Family and members of the diplomatic communities, aims at projecting the work of the medical profession and saving the lives of patients. It focuses on the role and regulations of the medical fields as well as over coming challenges.

In Sierra Leone, Mohamed Bangura vs. Charles Margai Now Set for Trial
The matter between the suspended former National Chairman of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change, Mohamed Bangura and the Party Leader, Mr. Charles Francis Margai came up yesterday 2nd November, 2010 at the High Court presided over by Hon. Justice Vivian Solomon. Both parties were present, and Mr. Mohamed Bangura was represented by lawyer E.T Koroma and the Ady Macauley while Lawyer Charles Margai represented himself. The Learned Honourable Justice Solomon looked into both arguments and ruled she would commit the matter for trial with Notices to be sent to the parties. Justice Solomon also gave 4 days for Charles Margai to reply.

In Sierra Leone, Finance Minister Launches ECOBank’s rapid transfer product
The Minister of Finance and Economic Development Dr. Samura Kamara on Monday 1st November, 2010 launched the Rapid Transfer Product of Ecobank at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex, Kingtom in Freetown. Speaking on the ceremony the minister expressed his pleasure to launch another product in the banking sector in this country. He said the banks, especially Ecobank is laying the strongest foundation to move the economy to higher height.

In Sierra Leone, Zain Gets New Managing Director
Sierra Leone’s leading telecommunication company, Zain which is soon to be re-branded as Airtel- Sierra Leone is now headed by a new managing director in the person of RVS Bhullar (Teddy). Teddy has replaced the former managing director, Ted Sant-Phiri as was disclosed in a press briefing held on Thursday at the Paradise City, Lumley Beach in Freetown. The incoming MD said he was marvel by the job done by the outgoing MD which he said made it possible for Zain to be the indisputable leader in terms of market in Sierra Leone. He disclosed that as a high profile authority in the company he would do his best to maintain the high standard attained by his predecessor. "This standard will be consolidated and enhanced to meet the telecommunications needs of the people of Sierra Leone," he assured.

In Sierra Leone, Okada Riders Seeks Advocacy Body
The Kingtom Commercial Bike Riders (Okada) on Tuesday 1st November, 2010 organized themselves into a team and stormed the office of Mr. Hi-Lance, Director of the Hi-Lance Progressive Movement, to help them form an advocacy body to be addressing the numerous problems they are presently facing in the street with the police. Speaking on behalf of the Okada Riders, One Mohamed Sesay told Mr. Hi-Lance that they were facing enormous problems in the street with pedestrians, and especially the police. "The police told us to avoid plying the central areas of the city and keep to its outskirts. We obeyed their command but they are still pursuing our bikes with long wooden boards studded with nails," he explained.

In Sierra Leone, African Minerals tours President Koroma round another Train
One of Sierra Leone’s leading mining companies, the African Minerals has brought another locomotive train to be added to their operational machinery. On Friday 29th October 2010, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma was taken on a conducted tour of the equipment at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown for inspection. Explaining about the locomotive, the company’s Managing Director, Moseray Fadika impressed it on President Koroma that the equipments were from credible companies in South Africa, Malaysia and Japan, and that they would be used to ensure easy transportation of materials from one site to another to enhance the smooth operations of the company.

In Sierra Leone, 352 Students Benefit from LMC Scholarships in Marampa
In furtherance of their corporate social responsibility, London Mining Company (LMC) on 23rd October, 2010 dished out scholarships to 352 students in the Marampa Chiefdom, Port Loko District. The ceremony which was hosted at the Lunsar Community hall attracted prominent personalities across the district. The scholarship, in the tune of Le 98.4 million is to cover tuition for the beneficiaries in the various schools in that chiefdom. Presenting the package on London Mining behalf, Lawyer Olga Solomon informed that the scholarships were to cover the 2010/11 academic year.

Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) Electoral Commissioner Cautions Detractors
The Electoral Commissioner of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA), Mr. Desmond B. Finney on 1st November 2010 cautioned those he referred to as detractors within the association not to bring the image of the association to disrepute by their actions. Addressing a cross section of the media at Premier Media Office, Circular Road in Freetown, Mr. Finney opined that since he was elected to that office by a two-third majority consent, he was willing and prepared to ensure free and fair elections.

In Sierra Leone, Government Abandons Pilgrims Under Rains at Airport
Over One Hundred and Fifty intending Muslim pilgrims to this year’s Hajj in Mecca, yesterday October 31st 2010, spent the night in total despair and unbelief as they watched some four hundred of their compatriots board a special flight but they themselves could not board the plane for reasons that were ill-explained to them.   The pilgrims, many of them undertaking trip on Government funding, were left to their own devices on the tarmac with no accommodation or feeding arrangements undertaken for them despite instructions for this to be done being reportedly given by the Hon. Vice President, Alhaji Sam-Sumana.

5 Sierra Leone Farmers Return from South Africa with Knowledge
With supports and sponsorship from COOPI Sierra Leone and European Union (EU), five Sierra Leonean farmers who visited Cape Town in South Africa for a five days learning and exchange programme which commenced on Sunday 10th and ended on Tuesday 19th October 2010, have successfully returned home well enriched with knowledge on modern agriculture. The five farmers who were drawn from the Mountain Farmers Association (MoFA) and the National farmers Association left Sierra Leone on Saturday 9th October for Cape Town where they were expected to exchange ideologies and mechanisms on modern farm management ways to improve on small scale farming as practiced in South Africa.

In Sierra Leone, UNFPA Trains 110 TBAs in Koinadugu District
In its drive to spread tentacles to the length and breath of Sierra Leone, especially under its rural community grass root empowerment programme, the UNFPA has trained a total number of 110 traditional births attendants (TBAs) in eleven chiefdoms in the Koinadugu District. The newly trained TBAs are expected to serve as community advocates, tasked with sensitizing the locals on the negative vices of gender based violence (GBV), HIV/AIDS, and teenage pregnancy.

In Sierra Leone, State House Official Accused of Land Grabbing
The Director of Open Government Initiative (OGI) attached to State House, Madam Kadijatu Sesay has been accused of grabbing a plot of land situated at New Site, Hill Station in Freetown said to belong to the son of one Mrs. Aminata Conteh. According to Kerifala Conteh, the son of Aminata Conteh, on the 20th October 2010, Mrs. Kadijatu Sesay hired and incited about fifteen (15) thugs to demolish a make shift structure (Pan Body) erected by her and carted away building materials valued at Nine million Leones (Le 9,000,000.00).

Statistics Sierra Leone Releases September Inflation Rate
Statistics Sierra Leone on Friday 29th October 2010 released the national inflation rate for Sierra Leone for the month of September 2010 at a press briefing held in the conference room of Statistics Sierra Leone on Tower hill in Freetown.   Giving a run down on the released inflation rate, the Section Head for Price and Labour Statistics Division Statistics Sierra Leone Mr. Samuel Turay revealed that the monthly rate of inflation for the composite index increased by 1.51%, when the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September 2010 is compared with the CPI figure for August 2010.
