In Sierra Leone, African Human Right Day Celebrated
The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) on 21st October, 2010 celebrated the African Human Rights Day at the CCSL Hall King Harman Road in Freetown on the theme ‘Human Rights a key to achieving sustainable peace and security in Africa.” In his address, Commissioner Revered Mosis Kanu noted that the 21st of October every year marks the commemoration of the day that was adopted by the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights in 1986. he however, informed that the adoption of a human rights’ treaty for Africa had begun as early as 1961.

In Sierra Leone, Concern Worldwide Holds Dialogue Forum in Waterloo
In its bid to give community people the opportunity to meet with their local leaders on a general platform to strengthen community participation in decision making process and to get them involved in local institutional structures through the Peri Urban Community Action for Food Security (PUCAFS) project, Concern Worldwide in collaboration with line ministries in the country on Wednesday 20th October 2010 concluded a one-day dialogue forum for community people and their local leaders at the western rural district Council hall in Waterloo. The programme which attracted councilors, civil servants and others stakeholders was described by the people as timely, saying such forum would give them the opportunity to know about governance and how it affects their respective communities.

In Sierra Leone, UNFPA engages Stakeholders on domestic violence
Prior to their last distribution of equipments to Traditional Birth Attendants in the fifteen and thirteen chiefdoms in the Bo and Bombali Districts respectively for sensitization and outreach programmes, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has completed a one-day training for 38 Paramount Chiefs and 38 Religious Leaders from those chiefdoms as a way of engaging them into the fight against maternal mortality, teenage pregnancy, Gender Based Violence, HIV/AIDS and other complicated diseases at the Hotel Sahara on Wednesday 20th October 2010.

As debates on the president speech heightens in parliament, the SLPP Member of Parliament Hon. Dr. Bernadette Lahai yesterday 20th October revealed that in 2006-7 the former SLPP government was faced with serious economic recession, but as a responsible government they tried hard to ensure that they maintained the standard of living in the country. She said President Koroma was in opposition, he challenged the SLPP by saying that “economic recession or not they need results from the government.”

In Sierra Leone,UNFPA Donates to TBA Advocacy Groups in Bombali Districts
The United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA), in collaboration with the Regional Offices of the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs, has distributed equipment worth over twenty five million leones (Le25,000,000) among traditional birth attendants and other stakeholders in thirteen (13) chiefdoms in the Bombali District. Thirty nine megaphones, thirty nine torchlights, twenty six ‘Panasonic’ tape/CD players, and thirty nine boxes of ‘Vinnic’ batteries were among the equipment distributed, as part of the agenda of UNFPA in complementing government’s efforts in the fight against infant and maternal mortality, teenage pregnancy, gender based violence, and HIV/AIDS.

African Mineral Limited has concluded its public disclosure stage one of the Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) report on the Tonkolili Iron Ore project. This marked the first of several events to come. After successful meetings held in Bumbuna, Makeni, Lunsar, Port Loko, Pepel and Lungi, the event which marks the first undertaken by a mining company in the history of Sierra Leone, was concluded at the Prestigious Taia Resort Hotel on Monday 18th October 2010. Present at the final meeting were various stakeholders in the public and private sector, civil society representatives, the media and a cross section of the public.

In Sierra Leone, Kenema Mayor Appeals for Hands on Deck for Development
Chief Brima Kargbo, the Mayor for Kenema City has applauded the efforts of the youth in developmental activities within the township, especially the support to make a facelift of the city. He said without youth support at the fore front, development can not visit any area. He boasted that he and his people are ready for development now and forever with support from the youth. In Sierra Leone, Alumni Association Boosts Gbinti School
The Gbinti Old Students Association (GOSA) on Friday 15th October 2010 presented 250 assorted text books to the Gbinti Secondary School, Gbinti in the Dibia Chiefdom, Port Loko District. The books were donated to the old students by the Sierra Leone Library Board (SLLB) for which GOSA Vice President, Mohamed Bundu, who chaired the ceremony, applauded the board and management of SLLB for the gesture, while underscoring that education is the key to development.

In Sierra Leone, Labour Congress on Capacity Building for the Informal Sector
The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) has commenced a three-day needs and capacity assessment workshop for the informal sector. The workshop which started on Tuesday 19th October, 2010 is made possible with the collaboration of LO-FTF Council Danida of Denmark. It has as theme “Decent employment in West Africa Project”. The essence of the workshop is to enable the leaderships of informal Sectors, unions or organizations affiliated to the Sierra Leone Labour Congress to undertake a critical assessment and formulate strategic plans of action aimed at identifying the needs and challenges of their members as well as the sector.

An under-water construction and marine contracting company known as Classdiving has boost the Aberdeen Municipal School by donating three sets of football kits worth hundreds of United States Dollars. Handing over the football kits to the pupils on Tuesday 18th October 2010, Classdiving Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Anders Peter Hansen, revealed that the football kits were donated to Classdiving by a renowned football club based in Wales, Penycae Football Club.

In commemoration of the fifth World Women’s Day of October 15th, and in recognition of their key role in supporting the efforts of Food Security drive in the country through practical endeavour and awareness raising to policy makers for the wider public, Rural Women Farmers in collaboration with Action Aid International-Sierra Leone on Friday called on Members of Parliament, especially the Oversight Committee on Agriculture, Land, Country Planning and Environment to make it a matter of urgency now to look into the draft document before the House since 2008 that clearly state their demands and how the government can solve them. The ceremony which was held at the Ramsy House at Liverpool Street in Freetown had as theme "To end hunger, support rural women."

In Sierra Leone, London Mining Trains Teachers on Library Management
In collaboration with Construction and Development Partnership (CODEP) the London Mining Company on Monday 18th October, 2010 trained about 63 Teachers from 33 Schools within the company’s mining communities on Library Management at the St. Peters Parish Hall, Lunsar Town in the Port Loko District. Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman Rev. Pat Abdulai welcomed the idea by the company to undertake such a novel venture in their chiefdoms, while calling on the participants to take the training seriously in order to improve on their teaching skills.
