Airtel Sponsors Sierra Leone Football
The leading mobile telecommunication Company in Africa and the world 5th mobile service provider, Bharti Airtel in Sierra Leone has donated the sum of Le500, 000, plus Airtel t-shirts to the Western Area Football Referees Association (WAFRA) as part its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. WAFRA, association is planning to start a fitness programme for all referees in the western area. The sum given to them by Airtel will be used judiciously to kick start the exercise. The chairman of WAFRA, Mr. Abdul Karim Kabia, congratulated Airtel for partnering with them and the Association promises to continue to work hand-in-hand with the new brand as its comes to improve the lives of Sierra Leoneans.

In Sierra Leone, Civil Society Frowns at Procurement Procedures
Director, Coalition of Civil Society and Human Rights Activists (CCHRA), Mr. Charles Mambu has said in Freetown that 70% of Sierra Leone Government’s funding goes to procurement. He made this disclosure at a one-day session of national training of civil society organizations and actors on the monitoring of public procurement and service delivery in the country at the YMCA Conference Hall in Freetown on Monday 6th December, 2010. In his delivery, Mr. Mambu lamented over the lack of transparency and accountability in the award of contracts. “Public procurement procedures have for years been plagued with lack of transparency and accountability.

In Sierra Leone, More Youths Graduate at PUCAFS
About six young vulnerable women on Monday 13th December, 2010 graduated in hair dressing and presented with start-up tool kits by a Non-Governmental Organization, Peri and Urban Community Action for Food Security (PUCAFS) at their No. 20 Pultney Street centre in Freetown. The six graduands underwent six months’ intensive training before receiving their certificates. Making a statement at the graduation ceremony, the Project Manager, Mr. Mohamed Gasama congratulated the set for having patiently gone through the training programme. He admonished them to purposefully utilize the tool-kits to develop themselves and their respective communities.

In Sierra Leone, Blackout, Water Shortage Hit Wilkinson Road
Residents of Wilkinson Road and its environs are currently suffering from acute water shortage and lack of electricity supply (blackout). It all started when the Chinese Contractors commenced work on the four lane Wilkinson Road project. Prior to the commencement of the road work, it was anticipated that the National Power Authority (NPA) and the Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC) were going to work in collaboration with the Chinese Contractors in order to prevent damage of valuable equipments belonging to the two government parastatals.

The National Disability Congress (NDC) has presented a position paper on the status of persons with disabilities in Sierra Leone to President Ernest Bai Koroma. The position paper contained a wide range of issues spanning from marginalization, discrimination to humiliation faced by people with disabilities. “It is no hidden secret that thousands of people are suffering from various forms of marginalization, discrimination, humiliation, and a host of other vices as a result of their disability status.

In Sierra Leone, Prison Escapees Charged to Court
Eight prison escapees appeared before Magistrate O. Wellington on Monday 13th November 2010. Emmanuel Charlie, Abdulai Jalloh, Abdul Rasta Kamara, Paul Ochukwu, Ifeanyi Chukwu, Mohamed Koroma, Mohamed Kamara and Abu Bakarr Conteh, were re-arrested by police following a manhunt that was launched to intercept and arrest prisoners who escaped from the Pademba Road prisons on Sunday 5th December 2010.

In Sierra Leone, Youths Riots in Freetown
Youths in the Freetown city, who have divided themselves into gangster and cultic movements, have been terrorizing the city with various deadly attacks over the past two days. Major streets in central Freetown were on the evening hours of yesterday Sunday 12th December 2010 flooded with youths armed with cutlasses, stones, knives, bottles and other dangerous weapons. They were using these weapons to indiscriminately attack people and business houses. That was the situation in the central business district of Freetown for over two hours yesterday and the police only intervened when most of the rioters had gone.

Principal of the Sierra Leone Grammar School, Mr. Akiwande Lasite and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Makeni, Reverend Father Joe Turay, on Thursday 9th December 2010, received the Second National Integrity Award from the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). The two distinguished personalities were awarded for distinguished performances and attitudes towards corruption. The ceremony took place at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex in Kingtom and it was held to mark International Anti Corruption Day.

Community Organization for Mobilization Empowerment–Sierra Leone (COME-SL), a civil society organization working in partnership with various other organizations including ActionAid International-Sierra Leone, Feed the Minds UK and the Justice Sector Development Programme of Sierra Leone is taking the lead in promoting poor and excluded rural women’s access to justice in the Baoma Chiefdom of Bo District, Southern Sierra Leone. In an attempt to address social injustices against women, COME-SL has partnered with Action Aid International Sierra Leone (AAISL), through funding from DFID to implement the “Access to Justice for Women” Project in four village communities in the Baoma Chiefdom.

In Sierra Leone, Early Marriages on the Increase
The enactment of the three Gender Bills in 2007/8 was an effort by government to address the problems affecting women and children in Sierra Leone. The issue of early marriage is one of the greatest challenges affecting rural women and girls. A survey conducted by this reporter discovered that Tambakha, Gbanti Kamaranka, Bombali Sheborah, Biriwa, and Wara Wara Yagala Chiefdoms are common places where parents give their girl children in marriage at an early age. Among the sources that have corroborated this assertion include the Section Chief of Fintonia Town, the chiefdom headquarter of Tambakha.

In Sierra Leone, Judiciary Commissions Two New Courts
The Sierra Leone Judiciary, under the leadership of Chief Justice Umu Hawa Tejan Jalloh, has commissioned two newly constructed court houses plus a Judicial and Legal Training Institute in Freetown. The various commissioning ceremonies that took place on Thursday 9th December 2010 attracted distinguished personalities including Vice President Samuel Sam Sumana, Inspector General of Police and his deputy, Francis Allieu Munu and Richard Moigbeh respectively, the newly appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Frank Kargbo, newly appointed Deputy Minister of Information and Communication, Sheka Tarawallie, Judges, Magistrates and a host of other legal practitioners.

Sierra Leone President, Associated Press & U.S. Embassy
Many aspects, of the infamous leaked U.S. Embassy Cable report on President Koroma of Sierra Leone having allegedly shielded his aide Kemoh Sesay from police arrest, have been largely discredited thus leaving the motives behind the authorship of such an erroneous cable to be highly suspect. For example, aside the supposed source of the Embassy’s allegations being attributed to “rumor”, most glaring discrepancy was that the well-known political alignment and orientation of the said Kemoh Sesay was deliberately skewed within the Cables to present a different picture from the reality to the ultimate reader.

In collaboration with West Africa Human Rights Committee and UNIPSIL, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) will today 10th December 2010 celebrate the International Human Rights Day with the theme “Human Rights Defenders Who Act to End Discrimination”. The ceremony will be held at the National Stadium Hostel in Freetown. The Acting Chairperson of Human Rights Commission (HRCSL) Mrs. Yasmin Jusu Sheriff in an interview said the commission in Sierra Leone joins other countries all over the world to celebrate Human Rights Day.

Coordinator of Youth Alliance for Peace and Development (YAPAD), Bockarie Ensah, has returned from Dakar, Senegal, after successfully representing Sierra Leone at the Alumni Enrichment Conference. At the conference hosted in Dakar from 30th November 2010 to the 2nd December 2010, the revered youth activist presented a brilliant paper on the topic: “Gender Issues and their Relations to Politics”. Ensah left the shores of Sierra Leone on the 28th November 2010 to participate in the conference that attracted participants from various countries, and returned home on 5th December 2010.

Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC), Elvis Gbanabom Hallowell, has vehemently denied rumours that he has resigned his position. Like bush fire in the harmattan, it was all over Freetown in particular and the world at large through the facebook social network that the SLBC DG tendered his resignation following a rift between him on one hand and the institution’s board on the other hand. However, the DG has confirmed that there was no rift between him and the board as widely rumored.
