In Sierra Leone, Nupha Partners With World Vision, Restless Development/Spw And Bdc To Commemorate World Aids Day
The Njala University Public Health Association (NUPHA) last Wednesday partnered with the international charities Restless Development/SPW, World Vision and the Bo District HIV/AIDS Committee to stage a symposium in commemoration of this year’s World’s AIDS Day on December at the School of Community Health Sciences Korwama Campus in the southern city of Bo. The symposium drew hundreds of observers, participants and guest speakers including the Base Manager of World Vision Mr. A Kwademoi, representatives of Network for People with HIV/AIDS, Plan Parenthood Association Sierra Leone (PPASL), Bo District Council etc.

In Sierra Leone, Transformation Education Donates Cabinets to Schools
Transformation Education, a non-profit making Christian-based organization operating under the aegis of World Hope International, has donated cabinets, steel doors and windows, to 12 pilot primary schools within the Freetown municipality. Handing over the items to the beneficiary schools during a conducted tour, the Director of Transformation Education, American-born Gwen Smith, informed that the donation was made possible courtesy of a grant from the Davis Project for Peace.

In Sierra Leone, Officer Unveils Human Rights’ Day Agenda
The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRC-SL) and its partners have lined up series of activities to celebrate the International Human Right Day from December 7th to 11th 2010. This was recently revealed in an interview with the Assistant Western Region Human Rights Officer, Mr. Ishmael Bayoh at their Wellington Street Office in Freetown. The programme, he noted will start with a symposium at the YWCA New Hall, to be followed by a drama competition at the British Council Auditorium. After those activities, Mr. Bayoh informed that there will be a ‘Best Speaker’s contest at the same British Council to be followed by a football match and a float parade. He said the occasion will be climaxed on December 10 by an official function at the National Stadium.

In Sierra Leone, Africell Launches Christmas Bonanza
One of the leading telecommunication companies in Sierra Leone, Africell Lintel, has launched a bonanza dubbed: “Africell Christmas Show”. The launch took place on Thursday 2nd December 2010 at the Country Lodge Auditorium, Hill Station in Freetown. Africell’s Managing Director, Mr. Robert El-Khaury recalled that his company celebrated the month of Ramadan with subscribers in its ‘Treasure Hunt’ promotion. “Thousands of our valued subscribers participated in that promotion and won themselves various goodies,” he said.

In Sierra Leone, Kenema City Gets New Radio Station Today
Kenema city will today, Friday 3rd December 2010 commission a brand new radio station. Proprietor of the new radio, Brima Kargbo Jnr., told the Awareness Times yesterday that the new radio will broadcast on frequency modulation 103.3 (FM 103.3), noting that it will target a nationwide broadcast. According to him, a similar project will soon be replicated in the northern part of the country in order for all the regions to benefit.

In Sierra Leone, President Koroma Blasts Corrupt Contractors
President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma has come down heavily on contractors and consultants in the country. Various contractors and consultants were summoned to State House on Wednesday 1st December 2010, where the President expressed disappointment over the lethargy being exhibited by contractors and consultants in executing their contracts. President Ernest Koroma strictly warned his guests to desist from such acts, as according to him, ‘it is not going to be business as usual’.

Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) Set to Demolish Houses in Bo
Houses and other structures within the ‘right-of-way’ perimeter along five roads presently under construction in Bo are going to face demolition. This was disclosed by the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) Regional Engineer, Francis Suluku Bockarie. Bockarie told newsmen in Bo on Wednesday 1st December, 2010 that the five roads under construction by the SLRA in that part of the country are Fenton Road, Bojon Street, Dambala Road, Tinkonko Road and Prince Williams Street.

Sierra Leone Action Network on Small Arms (SLANSA) Engages Youths on Violence & Security
The Sierra Leone Action Network on Small Arms (SLANSA) will today Thursday 2nd December 2010 end two day national conference on youths in governance. The conference is being held at the conference hall of the National Stadium Hostel in Freetown on the theme ‘Partnership in Promoting Human Security in Sierra Leone.’ Giving an overview of the conference, the National Coordinator of SLANSA noted that youths in governance programmes is one of her organization’s instruments in promoting human security in West Africa. He said the Sub-Region is as one of the most volatile and conflict prone region in Sub-Saharan Africa of which Sierra Leone had had a fair share.

In Sierra Leone, Agriculture Ministry, FCC, COOPI Sign Agreement
The Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS), the Freetown City Council (FCC) and COOPI have signed an agreement to work as a team to ensure the production of sufficient vegetable produces and to campaign for the use of such products by all citizens in the country. Addressing his audience during the signing ceremony in the conference room of the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security, the Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security, Dr. Sam Sesay said the campaign for all Sierra Leoneans to eat and produce vegetables and fruit is a step in the right direction, adding that his ministry is in high support of such moves.

In Sierra Leone, Phillip Neville Docked for Libel
Chief Executive Officer of the Standard Times Newspaper, Philip Neville and his Acting Executive Editor, Pa Issa B.M Kamara were arraigned before Magistrate Emmanuella Harding of Magistrate Court No.6 on Wednesday 1st December, 2010 to answer to two count libel charges of knowingly publishing false news and defamation contrary to the 1965 Public Order Act. The matter before the learned magistrate was brought against the duo by the Director of Finance of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Abdulai Conteh. The largest mobile phone service provider in the country, Airtel officially recognized children born on the 19th November 2010 in selected Government Hospitals in Freetown. This day was chosen for the simple fact that Sierra Leoneans gained communication freedom on this day. This Sierra Leone has been involved in this freedom through Airtel, a global brand now operating in Sierra Leone. Zain re-branded to Bharti Airtel marking the second time the company has changed its identity since being introduced to Sierra Leone 10 years ago. Bharti Airtel, the fifth largest telecommunications provider in the world last week completed the rebranding of its acquisition deal of Kuwait-based Zain’s operations in 15 African countries and Seychelles at a cost of $10.7 billion.

In Sierra Leone, Journalists Benefit from SGBV Training
The British Council in Sierra Leone has collaborated with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) to train journalists on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) reporting. The three days’ training forum commenced on Tuesday 30th November, 2010 at the British Council Auditorium, Tower Hill in Freetown. In his welcome address to participants, British Council Country Director, Louisa Waddingham said the session was aimed at increasing the knowledge and understanding of media practitioners in investigating and reporting on SGBV.

In Sierra Leone, New Chairman for Clearing & Forwarding Association
Abdul Akim Bangura of Alie & Santos Clearing and Forwarding Agency was on Saturday 27th November 2010 elected unopposed as chairman of the Association of Clearing and Forwarding Agencies in Sierra Leone. Electoral Commissioner Madam Elma Johnson described the elections as transparent and fair. “Only one candidate surfaced for the chairmanship and he was elected unopposed to serve a term of two years,” she explained.

In Sierra Leone, Geko Boosts Agriculture in Bombali.
Geko-Sierra Leone, a Non Governmental Organization, has recently donated two grater machines, assorted tool kits plus 5.5 acres of cultivated cassava farmland to the people of Rogbin village in the Gbendembu Ngowahun Chiefdom, Bombali District in northern Sierra Leone. In a Four-day training exercise in cassava processing and preservation for beneficiary farmers, Councilor Mamoud Kargbo of the Rogbin Ward in Constituency 033 admonished the participants to embrace such developmental opportunity accorded them by the NGO. He in that vein encouraged them to use the equipments and machinery judiciously.

Airtel Promises Affordable Communications To Sierra Leoneans
Bharti Airtel, the 5th leading global telecommunications company with operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa on Friday, November 19, 2010 officially launched their brand in Sierra Leone at the Miatta Conference Center, after taking over the operations of Zain. The association, which has elected Mrs. Annie Koroma, the wife of Mr. Sanpha Koroma as their new National President, is seeking to raise a lot of money from willing donors in order to take care of the mammoth needs of the school in the wake of the civil war that all but destroyed the school’s infrastructural fabric but certainly not the will and determination of the products of the worthy school located in Southern Sierra Leone.
