Vitafoam to invest $5 million in Sierra Leone
Vitafoam Company is all set to invest the sum of $5 Million in Sierra Leone in the next few years. This was revealed in a press conference held on 19th November 2010 by the company’s Country Representative, Mr. Silva E. Anogie at their 11 Howe Street office in Freetown. Mr. Silva E. Anogie told pressmen that his company is a leading Nigerian manufacturer of flexible, reconstituted and rigid foam products, with the largest foam manufacturing and distributing network throughout Nigeria. He said the company was incorporated on 4th August 1962 and has been listed on the floor of the Nigerian stock exchange since 1978.

In Sierra Leone, Stakeholders engaged on sustainable forest management
The Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security on Friday 19th November, 2010 engaged stakeholders in sustainable forest management on the implementation of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States and Forest Law Enforcement, and Governance and Trade (FLEGT) respectively at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Youyi Building in Freetown. The objective of the meeting was to allow stakeholders discuss the implementation of the ACP and FLEGT support programme in Sierra Leone which is soon to be hosted by the ministry through the Forestry Division.

In Sierra Leone, Teaching Service Bill Reaches Parliament
An intensive debate was witnessed in the House of Parliament on Thursday 18th November 2010, when the Bill entitled Teaching Service Commission Act 2010, was tabled in Parliament by the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Dr. Minkailu Bah. The Bill sailed through the introduction stage, first and second reading, before the House was adjourned to Friday 19th November 2010. Minister Bah told parliamentarians that the Bill entails essential elements that will improve the standards of quality education in Sierra Leone.

In Sierra Leone, Police Political Neutrality Questioned
Society for Democratic Initiative, Sierra Leone (SDI), has questioned the political neutrality of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), especially in the past two years. “SDI wants to remind the hierarchy of the Sierra Leone Police that theirs is a national force and must provide unbiased and untainted security to every Sierra Leoneans. The police force should not be an instrument or shield for political disorder by any political party,” reads a press release issued by SDI on the 18th November 2010, with regards to recent attacks launched against the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in Koidu.

Sierra Leone Athletics Association Elects Andre Hope as President
The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) on Thursday 18th November 2010 held its National Elective Congress at the Thompsonia Elliosion Hall, Syke Street in Freetown. Addressing the delegates at the congress, the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Desmond Finney, noted that he accepted to serve in the capacity of Chief Electoral Commission because he was once an athlete and represented had represented Sierra Leone in several competitions both locally and internationally.

Violent clashes between two ethnic groups broke out in the eastern city of Kenema on Tuesday 16th November, 2010 and continued until late yesterday afternoon. In Sierra Leone, Police Arrest Dozens of Misguided Youths
Police on Tuesday 16th November, 2010 arrested and detained over twenty-five youths from various locations across the city of Freetown, it has emerged. The young people were nabbed for attempting to disrupt the peaceful celebrations of the Eastend Paddle masquerade, and other mask devil shows, which were organized to mark the Muslim Eid-ul-Adha (Dunkay Sally) holiday. This was confirmed by the Head of Police Media and Communications ASP Ibrahim Samura, who said the arrested suspects are presently helping the police with their investigations.

A young man who was identified as One Osman Sesay is currently detained at the Central Police Division for stealing a lawyer’s Black Berry mobile phone in court. Lawyer RPG Robert fondly known as Legal One on Wednesday 17th November nearly lost his phone to the young man was he not smart enough to alert the police.

Njala University Students Union President, Samson Mustapha has succeeded in restoring peace on campus, following a protracted disagreement between the University’s administration and students. The disagreement was over fee increment and other related issues, and it continued until after the SU President and his team were able to get the administration to understand the students’ plights and revert to the old fees arrangement.

In Sierra Leone, New Radio Station for Kenema City
Plans are fast underway to establish a brand new radio station for the people of Kenema city and beyond. Speaking to Awareness Times recently, the owner of the radio Brima Kargbo Jnr., said the New Radio, “City Music” will be on air a couple of weeks from now, and would broadcast on Frequency Modulation FM 103.3 Brima Kargbo further said that the new radio station is expected to have a nationwide coverage soon. He said similar project would be replicated in the north in the shortest possible time.

In Sierra Leone, UPR Consultative Workshops to kick start soon
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Hon. Abdul Serry Kamara has said that they would be conducting workshops in all the four provincial headquarters in the country on the Universal Periodic Review. Speaking at a press conference in Freetown on Wednesday 17th November 2010, the minister disclosed that the four separate workshops would be geared towards validating Sierra Leone’s position as the country would be due for a review in May 2011. He said the country review to be done alongside that of other states will take place during the 11th Session of the Human Rights Council next year.

A former soldier of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) who latter transformed himself into a rebel commander has over the weekend begged for forgiveness over the crimes he committed during the decade long rebel war. The reconciliation ceremony was focused on Mr. Mohamed Savage a former soldier of the Republic of Sierra Leone who in 1998 became rebel commander in the eastern district of Kono.

In Sierra Leone, Murder Suspects at Court No.1
Suliaman Conteh, Lansana Kamara and Mohamed Bamba, all of Freetown, appeared before Magistrate Steven Conteh of Court No.1 on Wednesday 17th November 2010, on allegations of murder and conspiracy to commit felony, and are expected to make another appearance in court this morning. Testifying in court, PC 9785 Abu Julius Kamara, attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) branch at the Eastend Police Division said he was on duty on the 3rd November 2010 when Lansana Kamara and one Idrissa Koroma arrived at the police station with wounds all over their bodies. The wounds, he continued, were sustained from an assault over mobile phone disagreement.
