In Sierra Leone, Honourable Chief Justice Counsels New Lawyers
The Honourable Chief Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Madam Umu-Hawa Tejan-Jalloh on Friday 29th October 2010 appealed to the country’s latest crop of Barristers to comport themselves as persons truly deserving of the title of ‘learned’ as expected of practitioners of their profession. Hon. Haja Tejan-Jalloh made this statement during the Call-to-the-Bar Ceremony of the Sierra Leone Law school at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown.

In Sierra Leone, Reginald Fynn is President of the Bar
The Sierra Leone Bar Association has yesterday October 28, 2010 elected a new President to replace Lawyer Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara who resigned his position as President of the Bar upon taking up recent appointment as Anti Corruption Commissioner. Thetwo contestants for the position were Reginald Fynn Esq. and Ansu Lansana Esq. with Reginald Fynn emerging victorious in a landslide victory as the new President of the Bar Association.

In Sierra Leone, Chief Justice Commends President at Commissioning of New Court
The Honourable Chief Justice of Republic of Sierra Leone, Haja Umu-Hawa Tejan-Jalloh has commended President Ernest Bai Koroma for what she said was an indication of the shared vision of his Executive Arm and her Judicial Arm of Government to bring justice to the people and rebuild what the 11 years war had destroyed. The Chief Justice was speaking during the Thursday 28th October, 2010 commissioning of newly constructed Magistrate Court at York Village in the Western Rural District by H.E. President Koroma himself. She said that notwithstanding their heavy schedules, both the President and the Vice President traveled all the way to York to grace the auspicious occasion with their presence.

In Sierra Leone, Zain Enhances Education In Junior Secondary Schools
In a bid to give back to the people of Sierra Leone as Part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, Zain through its Build Our Nation initiative targeted the Junior Secondary School (JSS) sector and donated Educational items to pupils of Abdel Nasser Islamic Junior Secondary School in Bo and Badrudeen Islamic Junior Secondary School in Kenema, Eastern Sierra Leone. It could be recalled that Zain made similar donations a fortnight ago to the FAWE School in Makeni and the UMC Girls School in Kono. The Build Our Nation initiative is set to complement government’s effort in enhancing the future of pupils in schools as they are the future of this country.

In Sierra Leone, Africell Presents Hajj Packages to Winners
One of the leading telecommunication companies in Sierra Leone, Africell-Lintel on Friday 22nd October, 2010 presented hajj packages to three winners of the Africell Ramadan Promotion at the company’s headquarters, Wilberforce Street in Freetown. The lucky winners were Mr. Mohamed Sheriff Jalloh, Issa Sesay and Madam Musu Marah of Wilberforce Community. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Head of Section and Marketing Africell, Nancy L. Joseph recalled that it was at that same venue during one of their presentations for the Treasure Hunt Promotion that the Africell Ramadan Promotion was officially launched or subscribers. She said the Ramadan Promotion involved Quranic recitations and the timing for prayers.

The ruling All People’s Congress Government is in a dilemma with Workers at the National Power Authority (NPA) threatening untold repercussions if their grievances against EnergyMinister Ogunlade were not looked into immediately. The workers have revealed that as far as issues of administration are concerned at the NPA, the regime of the ex-minister of Energy and Power, Haja Afsatu Kabba is by far better than that of the present Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Professor Ogunlade Davidson whom they derogatorily term as a Foday Sankoh rebel and not just because of his bearded looks which resemble that of the dreaded former RUF rebel, Foday Sankoh of the RUF; but also because the workers openly stated yesterday that they despise ‘Minister Ogunlade Foday Sankoh’.and hung out all sorts of banners along Electricity House and Siaka Stevens Street on which were written insults against the Minister.

Children of Sierra Leone have presented an appeal in parliament with relation to barriers to the achievement of girl child education in the country. During the presentation of the petition on Monday 25th October 2010, First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Mrs. Sia Nyama Koroma, disclosed that according to recent data, 54 percent of primary school children in Sierra Leone are currently enrolled in schools and 64 percent of this category have successfully completed primary education.

In Sierra Leone, More Girls Benefit from Kula Samba Memorial Scholarship
Parents, Teachers and Pupils of Jawie Chiefdom in Kailahun District were on Tuesday October 19th 2010, full of joy and happiness as the Major Kula Samba Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded dozens of female school-kids with scholarships. The scholarships were presented to each of the recipients by renowned Sierra Leonean philanthropist Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden who travels regularly all the way from Freetown every year to present the scholarships in furtherance of her belief in empowering the girl child through scholarships.

In Sierra Leone, Flaws in Child Rights Act may delay Enactment by P’ment
Child Rights Coalition (CRC-SL), a Non Governmental Organization with focus on child advocacy over the weekend drew the attention of stakeholders to the many inconsistencies in the drafted 2007 Child Rights’ Act laid before Parliament for enactment by the Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Soccoh Kabbia. In drafting the said bill, the ministry is said to have left out several integral aspects and recommendations made by both the international community and local Civil Society Organizations which in the view of the coalition needed to be part of the Act before approval.

Sierra Leone has a high rate of child mortality, a menace that militates against the country’s development. Critical in this light is the improper or poor hygiene practices across the country. The importance of good hygiene and sanitary behavior ensures improved health for children and mothers and with adequate access to water improved health practices will directly control and or reduce morbidity and mortality rates. Hand washing with soap is one of the most effective ways of preventing diarrhoea diseases and pneumonia in children, which together are responsible for the majority of children’s deaths. Every year, more than3.5 million children do not live to celebrate their fifth birthday. Yet despite its life saving potential, hand washing with soap is seldom practiced and not easy to promote.

A notorious 419er, Thomas Kono-Valley who titled himself Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a fake and illegal affordable housing scheme, ‘Aid Salone’ operating in both Freetown and the provinces has been sentenced to four years’ jail term by the District Magistrate Court in Bo, Southern Sierra Leone. The Nigerian fraudster recently fell in the hands of the Bo Police Division and immediately charged to court where his trial, for the abundance of evidences against him took but few sittings.

The managing director for Mount Everest security agency limited, Michaela M. Abu Noah (Mrs.) has on Friday 22nd October in a press conference at the company’s Lightfoot Boston Street headquarters threw light on what she referred to as a self inflicted death of the former general manager of the company, Mr. Moses M. Mbayo. Mrs. Noah said they have not got any knowledge of the real reason for his alleged suicide, since she stated that they were not aware of a suicide note.

In Sierra Leone, Anotheazr round of Polio Marklate this month
The Ministry of Health and Sanitation, in collaboration with WHO and UNICEF has announced the fourth round of the National Immunization Day (NIDS) for marklate against polio to take start from the 28th October to the 31st. The main objectives of NIDS are to provide oral polio vaccines to all children under the age of five year (0-59) irrespective of their previous immunization status with the sole aim of eradicating polio in Sierra Leone.
