In Sierra Leone, Two Villages in Moyamba Declared Amnesty Villages
People of Gomdama and Taninihun Mboka villages which are geographically located five miles apart but are in the same Kongbora Chiefdom in the Moyamba District unanimously agreed on the decision of the Paramount Chief, elders, school pupils, teachers and the community in general to declare these villages ‘Amnesty Villages’ and as such members of the wider net of the Amnesty International (AI) organization. The decision also coincided with the launching of the Africa Human Rights Education Network in the two villages by Amnesty International-Sierra Leone.

Zain Sierra Leone’s Move Is In The Right Direction
Mobile operator Zain Sierra Leone has rolled out a raft of value added services that are expected to re-energise its competitiveness and positioning in the mass market. In the latest push, subscribers on the firm’s network can now have access to free WAP Internet service on their hand held devices, update their facebook profile through SMS only and send SMS to many through the web2sms. Having recruited more subscribers in the last months, mobile operator Zain Sierra Leone is now turning its focus on Value Added Services (VAS).

In Sierra Leone, NASSIT Observes Customer Service Week
The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) have on Monday 4th October 2010 started a week-long celebration to mark this year’s Customer Service Week at their various branch offices across the country commencing with a grand opening ceremony at the Freetown NASSIT Western Region Office that was epitomized by the hoisting of NASSIT flag. At the hoisting of flag ceremony, the Acting DPACS for NASSIT Mr. Peter Kenah thanked the people and Government of Sierra Leone for allowing NASSIT to operate as an independent entity without political interference over the years. He also showered praises on their customers for reposing confidence in the Trust since its inception in 2002.

In Sierra Leone, Human Rights Commission Engages Stakeholders on State of Human Rights Report (SoHR)
The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRC-SL) on Tuesday, 5th October started a three-day Constructive Engagement at the Presidential Lounge of the National Stadium in Freetown with relevant stakeholders related with human rights in the country to discuss the State of the Human Rights Report (SOHR) 2009 to be collated and reported on by the Commission. The engagement which ends today, Thursday, 7th October 2010 has attracted representatives of civil society organizations, Government officials and wide range stakeholders.

In Sierra Leone, Zain 2010 Corporate Football Kicks off
Sierra Leone’s leading telecommunication company, Zain on Saturday 2nd October 2010 commenced its annual corporate football tournament at the Wilberforce Hockey Pitch in the west end of Freetown. The ‘Zain’ annual tournament is organized to bring business houses together to participate in football matches to share funs, jokes and unity among them. At the opening ceremony the head of corporate affairs and communication at Zain, Kelvin Kellie said the tournament was a tradition for the company to bring their valued customers together as a family.

In Sierra Leone, Child Rescue Mission Launches Campaign on Inhospitable Environment
Child Rescue Mission-Sierra Leone (CRM-SL), a community-based organization operating in Koindu Town in the Eastern part of Sierra Leone last Saturday the 2nd of October, 2010 concluded a one-day sensitization campaign on addressing the unfriendly environmental measures within communities in post war Sierra Leone and the control of Waste Management in rural areas in Sierra Leone. The programme was funded by Disney Friends for Change, a youth service programme based in the United States of America. The programme started with a procession from the Community Court Barray through the Guinea/Liberia Road, the central business district of Koindu Town.

In Sierra Leone, Over 1, 000 Pupils Benefit from Mercury Scholarships
1,041(One Thousand and Forty-one) pupils of both primary and secondary schools, including physically challenged children have benefited from a scholarship scheme by a leading lottery company with focus on football betting operating in the country, Mercury International. The dishing out of funds ceremony took place on Monday 4th October 2010 at the Young Men Sports Club (YSC), Wilkinson Road in western Freetown. Giving the rationale behind such a move, the chief Executive Officer of the lottery, Samir Hassanyeh said the decision to dole out those scholarships was in the company’s bid to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as mandated by the statutory instruments under which Mercury as a company operates.

The Sierra Leone Indigenous Business Association (SLIBA) in collaboration with the German Cooperation Company (GTZ) has jetted in top business tycoons from the German Trade Mission in Ghana to discuss issues on the promotion of international business and trade in Sierra Leone. Addressing a cross section of newsmen at the SLIBA headquarters on Circular Road in Freetown on Tuesday, 5th October 2010, a delegate from the German Industry and Commerce in Ghana, Patrick Martens revealed that the purpose of their visit to Sierra Leone is to let investors see the opportunities to benefit from in international trade.

The Procurement Officer attached to the Kenema City Council, Daniel Kpukumu has warned members of the community and workers of the Kenema City Council who are engaged in subversive moves geared towards undermining his status in the council to stop hence forth. In Sierra Leone, Action Aid Ends one day Distributions of Awards in Kono.
Pupils in three Chiefdoms in Kono District were proud recipients of awards past Saturday, courtesy of Action Aid a non-governmental organization working in the district to end poverty through support to primary school pupils in Nimikoro, Ngorama Kono and Nimiyama chiefdoms respectively. Kono district prior to the intervention of organizations like Action Aid, has been reputed largely for the mining of diamonds, hence the low output of school pupils’ performance in public exams over the years.

Contrary to several publications in various local newspapers recently which suggests that the ALLFOUNDERS Club is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), the Chief of Administration for Club, Lawrence Spencer-Coker has corrected this error by revealing to this press Tuesday, 5th October 2010 at his Waterloo Street office that the organization IS NOT AN NGO, rather, it is a Private Members Club that is keen to be known as a CLUB for people who have founded and/or invented something with a mission to generate wealth.

In Sierra Leone, 3 Killed in Makeni Highway Accident
Three people, Mariama Bangura, Ishmael Bangura and Pastor Sesay met their untimely deaths last Saturday, 2nd October 2010 in a gruesome road accident along the Freetown/Makeni highway when the Peugeot car they were traveling in ran into a stationed mini van loaded with charcoal. According to eyewitness reports, the driver of the Peugeot car with registration number ADS 233 departing from Makeni Northern Sierra Leone for Freetown in the early hours of Saturday, lost control after developing a mechanical failure and ran into the stationed mini van with registration number AWA 890 close to a village located few miles to Masiaka in the Port Loko District.

In Sierra Leone, New Amphibious Buses to Ease Sea Transportation
Sierra Leoneans were last Saturday thrilled with excitement when an amphibious bus, the Salma ‘Watabus’ took off on a test ride from the Government Wharf offshore in Freetown and on to the sea with the Minister of Trade and Industry, David Carew and other important personalities on board. Prior to the inaugural ride of the amphibious buses, the proprietor, Modupe Taylor-Pearce Jnr. said the venture to bring this kind of development was part of President Koroma’s Agenda for Change which demands private sector to come onboard to compliment government’s efforts to develop Sierra Leone .

Fambul Tok International a non governmental organization based in Sierra Leone will release a Film and a Book next year focusing on the reconciliation process they are undertaking in the country. This was revealed yesterday, Monday, 3rd October 2010 at a press conference held at the Fambul Tok Conference Room at Robert Street in Freetown . Giving the background of his organization, the Executive Director Fambul Tok, John Coker noted that Fambul Tok is a Krio word meaning “Family Talk” and it facilitates post-war community-owned reconciliation in Sierra Leone , with a long-term, gender inclusive process led by each community.
