Sudden Death Hits CORD Sierra Leone
Executive Director of CORD Sierra Leone, Dr. Alfred A. Sandy, 58, on Wednesday 8th December 2010 died in Freetown. The late man was on his way to work when he suddenly fell ill and all efforts to save his life proved fruitless. CORD Sierra Leone Finance Officer told the Awareness Times that Dr. Sandy left the office at about 5:30pm on Tuesday 7th December 2010, looking healthy, whilst describing the loss as irreparable.

In Sierra Leone, Midwives Trained to Save Lives
Midwives, otherwise known as maternal and child health aides (MCHAIDES), have vowed to make maternal and infant mortality a thing of the past. This was done during a two days training workshop organized by ADDO-CARITAS in Serabu Town, Bompeh Chiefdom, Bo District, over the weekend. With support from the European Union, the training was aimed at empowering the participants on the use of ‘pantographs’ for pregnant women and to refresh their minds on care before and after delivery.

In Sierra Leone, Kailahun Gets First Class Hotel
In Torpkombu section of Kailahun town on Bendu Road imposingly stands the Luawa Resort Hotel, built by an illustrious son of the soil, Maya Kaikai. Perched on a piece of high ground overlooking the war-ravaged town, the plush facility is situated 34 miles from the international market at Koindu, 17 miles from Bendu and 2 and 7 miles respectively from the two pristine beaches on the Guinean border. The project started in December last year and is expected to be completed next month when the hotel will be formally opened although it is already in use.

In Sierra Leone, Central Prison Escapees Arrested
A Police Inspector attached to the Central Police Division has apprehended two notorious criminals who fled the central prisons on Sunday 5th December 2010. Inspector Samuel Kamara intercepted and arrested Mohamed Conteh and Junior Koroma in a minibus that was heading for Waterloo on Tuesday 7th December 2010 at about 6pm. Inspector Kamara told the Awareness Times that he was on his way home after work when the two fugitives flagged down the vehicle at a place called Poyo Bar, Calabatown, far east of Freetown.

Sierra Leone Celebrates International Volunteer Day
Sierra Leonean volunteers on Monday 6th December 2010 joined their counterparts and stakeholders the world over to celebrate the International Volunteering Day on the theme ‘Volunteering for the MDGs’. The ceremony was organized by the Volunteer Involving Organization Network (VIONET), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In her statement, the UNDP Country Director, Mia Seppo, said there were over 80 million young people in Africa that lacked beneficial employment according to UNFPA statistics. She said this number can be merged to volunteers. He informed that in Sierra Leone alone there are over ten thousand people who are members of VIONET and anybody who is above 18 years can also volunteer to serve the world by delivering service.

In Sierra Leone, ACC, Civil Society Plot Against Corruption
National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday 7th December, 2010 engaged civil society organizations on the proposed national strategy to fight corruption. The one day forum was held at the Santanno House, Howe Street in Freetown. Chairman of the programme cum NACS Director, Mr. Shollay Davies, said reports that come from the civil society are disseminated to all relevant stakeholders in the country who are expected to blow whistle on corruption and corrupt practices so that they would not be accused wrongfully by the public.

In Sierra Leone, Special Court to be replaced
The Principal Special Court Prosecutor in the Charles Taylor trial, a senior legal practitioner in International Criminal Law, Brenda Hollis, on the 2nd of December, 2010 disclosed that the Special Court for Sierra Leone would be replaced by an individual court that will continue to prosecute and try other perpetrators behind the 11 years mayhem in the country that the Special Court will be unable to prosecute after its official mandate shall come to an end by 2012. She made this disclosure while giving a Public Lecture to students of the Mass Communications Department, Fourah Bay College in Freetown. Brenda Hollis referred to Sierra Leone as one of the most peaceful African states she has ever worked in considering the fact the people accepted in totality the establishment and existence of the Special Court.

In Sierra Leone, Parliament Endorses Teaching Service Commission
The House of Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone on Tuesday 7th December 2010 unanimously endorsed the Bill titled ‘The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission Act 2010’ into Law. The bill was tabled before the House by the Minster of Education, Youths and Sports, Dr. Minkailu Bah. In his argument, the Minister informed Members of Parliament that such a bill deserved a national identity, referring to it as a replica of developmental initiative that would change the educational system to a better standard.

In Sierra Leone, London Mining on Regional Consultations
London Mining Company Sierra Leone on 2nd December 2010 commenced regional consultation and disclosure meetings on the Environmental, Social Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA). It all started at the CCSL Hall in Freetown and later reached Port Loko District Council Hall in Port Loko, northern Sierra Leone. Chief Operation Officer, London Mining Company, Mr. Luciano Ramus said the company was founded in 2005. “London Mining has worked in several countries across the world but Sierra Leone is more important to the company as a result of the great investment it has in the country,” he explained.

In Sierra Leone, Prisons Boss Dismissal Condemned
A civil society organization called Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) has strongly condemned the dismissal of the Director of Prisons Department, Mr. Moses Showers. The service of Showers was terminated on Monday 6th December 2010 following the escape of nineteen hardcore criminals from the Pademba Road maximum prisons. Speaking on national radio, CGG Coordinator, Valnora Edwin, described the dismissal as unjustifiable and unacceptable.

In Sierra Leone, Prisons Boss Sacked… 8 Prisons Officers Arrested
The services of the Director of Prisons Department Moses Showers have been terminated for what the Vice President considers as an unacceptable sabotage. The decision to sack Showers was reached following the escape of ‘nineteen’ prisoners from the central prison on Sunday 5th December 2010. Mr. Sampha Bilo Kamara was appointed to serve as Acting Director of the Prisons Department. Police headquarters have also confirmed that eight prisons officers have been arrested and are presently being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).

In Sierra Leone, Goderich Police Arrest Drums of Stolen Fuel
Goderich Police Division, under the new leadership of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Alhaji Gibril Kabba Kamara aka Gallant Police, has intercepted and arrested dozens of drums and gallons of fuel which is believed to have been stolen from CSE Construction Company. Local Unit Commander of the Goderich Police Division, Alhaji Gibril Kabba Kamara, confirmed to the Awareness Times on Monday 6th December 2010 that the discovery and arrest were made on Thursday 3rd December 2010.

In Sierra Leone, CGG Holds Confab on Africa Charter on Democracy
A local non governmental organization Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) on Wednesday 1st December 2010 organized a one day conference on the Africa Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance at the Kona Lodge in Freetown. The conference attracted government officials, civil society organizations, representatives from the regions and the media. The Africa Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance exists within the spirit of strengthening the democratic process that started in Africa at the end of the cold war in the early nineties. The charter is being viewed by the Africa Union (AU) as an innovative to address the challenges of coups and counter coups, autocratic and dictatorship regimes that threatens peace.

Sierra Leone's President Koroma Accused of Lack of Due Diligence
Serious concerns are being raised over a seeming penchant of the President of Sierra Leone appending his signature to documents he might not have properly read in a glaring show of lack of due diligence at the Office of the President. Even as the embarrassment over the 3-Years Turnaround outright lies is yet to ease, it has now emerged that President Koroma on 3rd December 2010 appended his red-inked signature to the official release of his list of new Cabinet which contained a serious error which has now been unfortunately transmitted all over the world.

Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), Commissions New Pilot Boat
Thursday last week marked yet another memorable day at the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), Government Warf in Freetown when the Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Ibrahim Kargbo deputized His Excellency, President Ernest Bai Koroma to commission a new pilot boat for the Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA). It turned out to be a dual role played by the minister as he was also opportuned to commission Maritime Administration’s Search and Rescue Boat. SLPA’s new acquisition, M.V Rokel is ‘the beginning of re-branding the Authority,’ so noted the General Manager, Benjamin O Davis.

In Sierra Leone, Government Launches ‘Business Bomba’ II
The second phase of the Business Bomba plan Competition geared towards enhancing entrepreneurship and fostering a conducive business climate in Sierra Leone was on Friday 3rd December, 2010 launched by the Minister of Trade and Industry, David Carew at the Youyi Building in Freetown. This is a collaborative initiative by the Government of Sierra Leone, UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). The competition is being organized by AFFORD-Sierra Leone.
