SLPP Youth Leader Arrested & Detained in Port Loko
As reports of inroads made by the country’s main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) party into the ruling APC party’s Northern strongholds increase everyday, indications are that the ruling party is getting to be jittery over these developments. One such indication of this suspected jittery behaviour is the unexplained detention of a prominent SLPP Leader. Police in the northern district of Port Loko have confirmed the arrest and detention of the Port Loko Young Generation Leader of the SLPP, who also doubles as the SLPP’s Greenland Chairman, Mr. Bai Sheku Wurie.

John Benjamin Commends IPRP, ACC and Judiciary in Sierra Leone
John Benjamin, Leader of the country’s main opposition SLPP party has commended the efforts of the National Public Procurement Authority (NPPA), the Independent Procurement Review Panel (IPRP) the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Sierra Leone Judiciary for what he described as “the successful prosecution and conviction” of the country’s former Minister of Health & Sanitation, Mr. Sheku Tejan Koroma on three-count charges of Abuse of Office, Abuse of Position and wilfully failing to comply with laws and procedures and guidelines relating to procurement, tendering of contracts and management of funds, contrary to sections 42(1),43 and 48 of the Anti-Corruption Act 2008.

Lamin Vonjoh Ngobeh to Appeal
Reports reaching The Examiner Newspaper indicate that Mr. Lamin Vonjoh Ngobeh will appeal to the Supreme Court against the ruling of the Appeal Court on Friday, March 5 this year in which Hon. Justice S. A. Ademusu and Hon. Justice N.C. Browne-Marke ruled for Hon. Paramount Chief Mohamed Kailondo Banya of Luawa Chiefdom in the Kailahun District to retain his staff of office, while Hon. Justice Patrick O. Hamilton maintained that he will order for a Caretaker or Regent Chief to be appointed to oversee the affairs of the Chiefdom until proper elections are held.

The Honourable Member of Parliament representing Constituency 74 (Bo Central Constituency), Hon. Eric Bobo Jumu over the weekend told The Examiner in a telephone interview that he was not at the scene where it was alleged that a cross section of Journalists who went to cover the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party SLPP mini convention in Bo, Southern Province a week ago, were beaten.

Residents in the heart of the Bombali District came out in their numbers to welcome the SLPP entourage that stormed the area on March 8 and 9 to present their candidate, Lama Bangura, to the people of Constituency 33, Bombali District.

Sierra Leone's Agriculture Minister Faces Parliament
The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Dr. Joseph Sam Sesay, has appeared before the House of Parliament to explain the export and exploitation of all rubber plantations in the Pujehun and Kenema districts by companies and land owner. Minister Sam Sesay told Parliamentarians on Thursday 4th March 2010 that there were a lot of controversies surrounding the five government owned rubber plantations in previous years.

Mr. Bampia Bundu, a reporter at Awareness Times newspaper has yesterday corrected an erroneous assertion in a press release issued from the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) which had alleged that Madam Hariatu Turay, Deputy Women’s Leader of the opposition SLPP had been present when journalists were being beaten but she did nothing to stop the beatings.

NEC Set to Replace APC Eddie Turay
The National Electoral Commission (NEC) is all set to conduct parliamentary bye-election in Constituency 33, Bombali District, to replace former All People’s Congress (APC) Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. Eddie Turay. The parliamentary seat for the Constituency in question, which comprised of areas including part of Sanda Loko Chiefdom, Gbanti Kamaranka Sanda Tendaren Chiefdoms, has remained vacant since the appointment of Hon. Eddie Turay to the Sierra Leone High Commission in the United Kingdom.

APC Minister Admits Threat Against Journalist
Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Security has told journalists in Freetown that he will "hit" journalist Melvin Rogers of Radio Wanjay and the latter "will not survive the hit". This public pronouncement of Minister Moijueh Kaikai in a press briefing summoned on Tuesday 2nd March 2010 at his New England Ville office, lends credence to an earlier allegation of Rogers against the Minister in an interview with the Awareness Times Newspaper.

Members of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have resolved to hold the party’s National Delegates Conference to elect the party’s Flagbearer in March 2011. This resolution was reached on Sunday 28th February 2010 following three days of extensive debates on certain aspects of the party’s constitution and the way forward. The confab that witnessed the amendment of the SLPP Constitution was held at the Bo City Hall, Bo City, Southern Sierra Leone, where the members of the SLPP converged over the weekend to map out strategies for the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

The defection from the SLPP to the APC of the late Councilor J. Ruling APC Big Guns Named in Political Violence Scandal in Sierra Leone
The ruling All People’s Congress (APC) is presently faced with the enormous task of defending itself from indictments of its operatives being at the forefront of politically motivated violence in the country as a whole and Freetown in particular. APC operatives including the Mayor of the Freetown Municipality, Herbert George Williams, Close Protection Guard of the President, Idrissa Kamara aka Leather Boot, President’s brother, Sylvanus Koroma and Foday Government Wharf, have been named in the Independent Review Panel (Shears-Moses Commission of Inquiry) as those who spearheaded the 2009 March 13 and 16 deadly attacks on the main opposition party’s headquarters and supporters in Freetown.

Military Court Martial Imprisons Two Soldiers in Sierra Leone
Two military personnel serving in the Maritime Wing of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) have been sentenced to serve two and one year jail terms respectively in the Pademba Road Prison in Freetown. A press release issued by the Joint Force Command Headquarters on Friday 19th February 2010 explained that the two officers, Lieutenant Commander Philip Junior Bob Yokie and Sub-Lieutenant David Sahr Kamanda were sentenced on the 11th February 2010 by the Military Court Martial Court, after being convicted of misappropriation of fuel allocated to Government Wharf Maritime Wing Base in Freetown.

Opposition SLPP Local Councillor Donates to Goderich Health Center
The only Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Councilor in the Western Area, Ibrahim Kabbah aka Councilor Small Borbor on Friday 19th February 2010 donated six wheel chairs, ten working frames and two clutches worth Millions of Leones to the Goderich Community Health Centre in Goderich. Donating the items, Councilor Kabbah stated that the donation was made to improve on the facilities of the hospital. He said the donated items were given to him by a friend called Mohamed Janneh, who is a resident of North America. He called on the beneficiaries to judiciously use the donated equipment. According to the SLPP Councilor, the items will facilitate the movement of the sick and physically challenged patients to and from the Health Center.

All People’s Congress (APC) Member of Parliament (MP) representing Constituency 105 has commenced a community road construction project in the eastern part of the Freetown city. This disclosure was made to the Awareness Times Newspaper on Thursday 18th February 2010 by Honourable Nuru Deen Sankoh Yillah. According to the APC MP, he decided to undertake the said project in order to make his Constituency accessible by vehicles and people.

Members of the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) party have started playing hanky-panky (Yuki-Yuki) by the way and manner they recently treated the formal opening of the newly-formed Independent Review Commission. They (APC) were unexplainably absent from the august ceremony of the formal opening of the Commission that was held in the conference room of the National Stadium Hostel in Freetown on Monday 15th February 2010, even though formal invitations had been sent to all the relevant parties.
