THE DECISION TO BAN THE SALE OF TIMBER WITHIN SIERRA LEONE- WHOSE BRAIN DEAD IDEA WAS IT ?
How could anyone in his or her right mind talk about development from one side of the mouth and from the other side ban the domestic use of timber? Why do those in authority always come up with easy solutions to problems, instead of sitting down and solving problems with practical solutions? Should a ban on the exportation of timber also have encompassed a ban on the domestic use of timber? The decision to ban the sale of timber locally, which is used for the production of boards, widely used in the construction industry without doubt was a brain dead idea

Book Review: Harvest of Hate: Stories and Essays: by John Carter.
It’s an old story. An immigrant comes to America to fulfill a lifelong dream, to live in the land of milk and honey. Then there’s the homesickness. And the dream, the promised land, is not only bathed in the sunshine of opportunity, but the shadows of reality as well. In 1990, a Sierra Leonean left the shores of Freetown for the promise of America. But soon Roland Marke – a former teacher with a knack for creative writing - was worrying about the folks back home in West Africa, struggling with his thick accent to get a job, wondering why his dream was beginning to feel nightmarish.

SLPP Against Corrupt Sacred Cows
The main Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has vehemently expressed distaste for the selectivity in the so-called fight against corruption in Sierra Leone. At their Inaugural Monthly Press Meeting yesterday April 8th 2010, the Chairman of the SLPP, stated in no equivocal terms that the party was not impressed with the manner in which the Anti Corruption Commission has been selective in its duties. SLPP condemned what it called the regime’s corrupt sacred cows. Whilst no specific names were mentioned, it will be recalled that press reports in various local newspapers have unearthed massive corruption of various shapes and sizes that the Foreign Minister Zainab Hawa Bangura has been up to but which corrupt actions have all been overlooked by the Abdul Tejan-Cole led Anti Corruption Commission to the amazement of observers.

Media Landscape Change
There was a time in this country when the views of certain newspapers and commentators held sway in the public domain but to paraphrase Emmerson Bockarie, THOSE DAYS ARE GONE! Tejan Kabbah is Sierra Leone’s Greatest Leader so far
When I read in the Monday, March 15, 2010 edition of the Awoko newspaper Minister Alpha Kanu’s assertion that Sierra Leone has had ONLY three GREAT LEADERS namely: Sir Milton Margai, Siaka Probyn Stevens and the current President, Ernest Bai Koroma, what first came to mind was that the Minister was merely being presumptuously deceitful and sacrilegiously economical with the truth and a deliberate attempt to distort history. How can anyone genuinely grade Sierra Leone’s leaders since independence and leave out Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Tejan Kabbah?

Political Party Foot Soldiers
Over the Easter Break, I found time to visit with one of my favourite people, former President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. His wife, Isatu Kabbah (IJK) the current Women’s Leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) had just returned from a trip out of Freetown to Kambia District where she had gone with loyal party supporters to spread SLPP’s message. The SLPP loyalists on arrival looked tired, haggard and covered in dusty sweat. One thing came across to me distinctly whilst I was observing them and that was their deep commitment to SLPP.

Empowering the poor through community-based paralegals
More than half of the world’s population are not satisfactorily protected by law or the institutions established to govern them. The poor are in a particularly helpless position- their rights are routinely violated, they are unable to access formal institutions and are incapable of speaking out. In Sierra Leone the vast majority of the population do not have access to the formal justice system. They have to rely on informal or traditional institutions which often leave them vulnerable to exploitation and discrimination.
