Just about five years ago, this place where I am shown walking was a huge thick virgin forest. Today, it is home to the much admired SYLVANUS KOROMA CAMPUS of the Catholic-owned University of Makeni at Yoni, Bombali, Northern Province. It spans well over 300 acres.
In first photo, I am flanked on right by the University Registrar who is a white American law lecturer from Boston Massachusetts; on my left is the university’s students’ president. Whilst taking me on tour this afternoon, they explained to me of how this unsung initiative of President Ernest Bai Koroma, son of a famous educationist (late Pa Sylvanus) has turned out to be growing at an exponential rate so much so that the University is now refusing to admit students rushing to Makeni from all over the country; refusing them entry not because of lack of credentials but because the esteemed Law and Information Technology faculties on SYLVANUS KOROMA CAMPUS just cannot admit all qualified applicants.
