President Ernest Bai Koroma has yesterday Thursday January 22nd 2009, sworn in His Lordship, Honourable Justice Patrick Omolade Hamilton as a substantive Supreme Court Judge at a ceremony at State House in Freetown, Sierra Leone. With the addition of Justice Hamilton to the contingent of Judges seated at the highest court in the land, the President has further strengthened the Judiciary along the same lines he has been doing since he himself was sworn into office in 2007.

Justice Patrick Hamilton who studied Law in the United Kingdom has earned for himself a formidable reputation as a fearless advocate for justice in the society as well as a judge who renders justice without fear or favour. He has been severally referred to as a "true Daniel" following some of his forthright judicial stances.

Hon. Justice Patrick Omolade Hamilton, the country’s newest Supreme Court Judge returned back home on 3rd December 1977 after being called to the Bar in England. He started work as a State Counsel but was catapulted to the Bench three years later when he was made a Magistrate. Since then, he steadily rose on the Bench becoming Senior Magistrate, Principal Magistrate and then High Court Judge and Appeals Court Judge before finally being approved by Parliament to be one of those privileged few who will ever occupy a seat at the Nation’s highest Court.

According to a State House Release, the President whilst congratulating the new Supreme Court Judge, said he believed "the confidence reposed on Patrick Hamilton would not be misplaced".

"I am confident in your ability to help redeem and restore the image of the judiciary," President Koroma told the judicial luminary in front of an audience that included the judge’s mother, Mama Hamilton, his younger brother Donald and his sister Patricia who all flew in from London to witness the swearing-in. Also present were all the Judges children.

Ending his address, the President also asked Hamilton to "use his experience to work with colleagues to the best of his ability and help rebuild the battered image of the judiciary".

For his part, Justice Hamilton expressed just how much he felt honoured even as he expressed humility in the face of his appointment. He thanked both the President and Chief Justice Umu Hawa Tejan Jalloh for "giving him such a great responsibility".

"It has always been my long dream to sit in the Supreme Court. I am sure that I shall help rebuild the credibility of the judiciary before the end of your term of office," Justice Hamilton stated.

According to the State House News Room, the new Supreme Court Judge was introduced by Attorney General & Minster of Justice A.F. Serry-Kamal, while Chief Justice Umu Hawa Tejan Jalloh gave the vote of thanks.
