Sources close to State House have informed the Awareness Times that the All People’s Congress (APC) led Government of Sierra Leone is planning to give a state funeral to the late Vice President and Finance Minister of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Hon. Dr. Salia Jusu-Sheriff.
Family sources have disclosed that the remains of the late statesman, who died on Saturday 19th December 2009 in a London Hospital in St. John’s Wood following a protracted illness, would be flown to Freetown on Tuesday 29th December 2009. It has also been disclosed that the State Funeral has been scheduled for Wednesday 30th December 2009.
Family members have also told the Awareness Times that the late Hon. Dr. Salia Jusu-Sheriff would be finally laid to rest on Friday 1st January 2009 in his village situated few miles from the eastern city of Kenema.
Hon. Salia Jusu-Sheriff served the old APC regime of Joseph Momoh as Vice President and severally acted in the capacity of President, whenever Momoh traveled. He was also Finance and Economic Planning Minister in the Siaka Stevens APC regime. The late man also served in the cabinets of Sir Milton Margai and Albert Margai.
Late Salia Jusu-Sheriff resigned as Vice President in the old APC following the return of multi-party democracy in 1991, in a bid to lead, and revive the Sierra Leone People’s Party, which had been in the political wilds for close to three decades.
He was elected to Parliament in 1962 under the SLPP ticket to represent the then Kenema South Constituency. He was married to Gladys Jusu-Sheriff and blessed with five children including the Deputy Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), Yasmin Jusu-Sheriff.
Members of the main opposition SLPP have expressed sadness over the death of Hon. Jusu-Sheriff. May his soul rest in peace.
