‘Margai can’t challenge Berewa’ in Sierra Leone

About five thousand youths from across the East End of Freetown, clad in T-shirts bearing the portrait of Vice President Solomon Berewa, on Easter Monday, 17th April, 2006 made Freetown sweet and jubilating when the Youth Chairman and Chairman of the Police Partnership Board for Zone II, Mr. Ibrahim Mansaray popularly known as ‘Coachie’ sent them dancing and singing along the streets of the city behind their devil masque, the ‘Arie Magazine’.

Mr. Ibrahim Mansaray: Youth Chairman

According to Coachie, everything about the masque dance was spontaneous and was entirely sponsored from his pocket in order, as he puts it, "To show Charles Margai that he cannot challenge Solomon Berewa in Freetown in terms of popularity especially in the East end," he said.

Mr. Mansaray went on to state further that Mr. Margai is basking in sheer illusion as he is being giving the impression by "those fooling him that he is a popular choice of the people of Freetown."

Coachie explains to Awareness Times yesterday that he is prepared to undertake any amount of financial funding in the line of promoting the popularity of Mr. Solomon Berewa whom he described as "The popular choice of Freetown." He said the people of Freetown especially the East are always ready to manifest their love for Berewa and the SLPP "because of what President Kabbah, Mr. Berewa and the SLPP have done and continue to do for this country."

The theme for the Easter day youth jamboree therefore was, "SLPP at Work". During the masque parade, the youths sang songs of praise of the SLPP, recounting the positive inroads the party has done in the areas if education, health, roads rehabilitation and reconstruction, resettlement and rehabilitation of destroyed infrastructure across the country, the improvement in the national economy etc.

Mr. Mansaray told Awareness Times that that besides, he had since had admiration first for President Kabbah and his style of leadership, which he says "No doubt will be maintained by Mr. Berewa with additional innovations," he says. He also stated that President Kabbah has proved to be an international Statesman by the way he was dethroned and reinstated on two separate occasions. "For such an internationally acclaimed man to decide on who to succeed requires total support from party members and certainly the entire country," he stated.

He went to state that instead of party members protesting for what the party should do for them, they should be concentrating their minds on what to do for the party in order to empower it and ensure its victory. "Most people who are blaming the SLPP for not doing anything for them have themselves nothing to show as what they have done for the party’s progress," Mr. Mansaray noted.

He further challenged that come April 27th he was prepared to show that Mr. Berewa is indeed very popular as against the negative perception that he and the SLPP are unpopular in Freetown.
