Parliament honours four in Sierra Leone

In what has been described as a clear show of support and appreciation for the recognition of the outstanding performances of personalities in society by HE the President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, Honourable Members of Parliament Tuesday joined friends and families to show facilitation to the Speaker of Parliament, Justices Edmund K. Cowan and three other Members of Parliament for being among the people who were bestowed with National Awards on 27th April, 2006.

The felicitation to the Hon. Speaker of Parliament was made under a private member motion that was proposed by Hon. Hardy Bun Sheriff of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) representing Bombali district, and seconded by Hon. J.Q.B Sawi.

Making the proposal, Hon. Hardly B. Sheriff stated among other things that colleague Members of Parliament should hands to congratulate Hon. Justice Edward K. Cowan who was awarded the highest prestigious award in the land, the ‘Grand Commander of the Republic of Sierra Leone’.

Alongside Justice Cowan were three Members of Parliament who were also honoured by being awarded the prestigious titles of the ‘Order of the Rokel’.

They include Hon. Edward M. Turay of the opposition All Peoples Congress (APC), Hon Paramount Chief Bindi Samba Hindowa representing Bo district, and Hon. Paramount Chief Bai Sama Lamina Sam II representing Port Loko district.

According to Hon. Hardy Sheriff, the award of the Speaker of Parliament and the three Parliamentarians is of great significance, adding that it goes to show how much confidence the President has in parliament.

The Hon. Mohamed F. Turay of the SLPP, in his remarks,

stated that Justice Edmond K. Cowan deserves the honour, describing him as a man of great substance.

He motivated the recipients to make good use of the awards, and encouraged other MPs to emulate their good works.
