Ernest Koroma went to King Tom Power Station for an Orchestrated Deception in Sierra Leone

His Excellency the President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma has come under serious local criticism for what has been termed as a "Presidential Orchestrated Deception" to mislead the public.

President Ernest Koroma and Afsatu Kabba at the King Tom Power Station shown behind them are Minister Serry Kamal and Minister Alhaji Jalloh

This came about following the President yesterday 20th December 2007 seemingly faking that there was electricity in Freetown following his commissioning of a 15Megawatts generating plant for the provision of such electricity at a colourful occasion at the King Tom Power Station.

In his statement, His Excellency recalled what he said in his address to Parliament on the 5th of October where he categorically stated that energy is his government’s topmost priority as the country can be put on the path to development with the availability of continuous flow of electricity. He said the APC government inherited an electricity supply to the city below 10 Megawatts, but that since his government aims at seeing the entire country provided with uninterrupted electricity supply, he vouchsafed that the city of Freetown be given premium for now until the Hydro power work is completed to serve the entire country.

President Koroma and his Vice, Sam-Sumana are shown with Lebanese children of Contractor seated behind them alongside Hon. Chericoco (middle) and Hon. Alimamy Petito Koroma (left) and Hon. Kemoh Sesay (extreme right) during the orchestration

"That is why I set a target date to light the city of Freetown for the 20th December 2007 which I boastfully say has been fulfilled," he said. He therefore, commended all who put their hands on deck to see the goal achieved, adding that with a change of attitude and collective work, the country can become a paradise.

He proceeded to warn National Power Authority (NPA) employees to refrain from illegal connections and stealing of oil, stating that his government will bring to book defaulters. He urged the entire citizenry to desist from stealing NPA cables and admonished all to pay bills for the sustainability of the "now available electricity supply."

On her part, the Minister of Energy and Power, Haja Afsatu Kabbah described the ceremony as historic as she said the vision of the president has been realized. She also took the opportunity to thank all stakeholders for their individual efforts in helping achieve the goal.

At the occasion, public phone calls by APC officials were made to different parts of the capital city where loud responses were given by recipients of those calls that indeed electricity was now flowing to those areas.

However, when journalists left Kingtom and themselves called in to those areas of Freetown, they were stunned to learn that it had all been a sham and no electricity even flowed for a single second in the areas cited.

Cutting the tape at the charade yesterday

"It was all a Presidential Orchestrated Deception to fool Freetown residents that the promised date of December 20th for nonstop flow of 24 hours electricity had been achieved," a senior journalist opined to this medium.

President Koroma had also stated during his self-proclaimed boasting that yesterday’s December 20th date was an ambitious one.

It is now clear that Koroma and the APC’s ambition did not come to be. Sierra Leone is still without flowing electricity in most parts of its capital city. The electricity situation is just as it was left by the erstwhile SLPP Government of Tejan Kabbah.

"Ernest Koroma gets an ‘E’ for making an effort as he might also have been a victim himself who genuinely thought he was lighting up Freetown but all the other actors in yesterday’s shameful charade should be given straight ‘F’s" an irate housewife stated late last night.

The Old and the Young thronged to King Tom Power Station yesterday to witness the shameful orchestration of events. Aged grandmas who could recall electricity before the first APC regime of Siaka Stevens brought perpetual 'black-outs' to be a regular state and youths who have never experienced 24 hours continuous electricity in their lifetime are shown in this photograph as they eagerly swallow the lies that electricity was now flowing only to return home and meet BLACKOUT!

Meanwhile, other citizens contacted by this newspaper asked for patience to be exercised for a few more days and weeks as President Koroma’s promised 24 hours continuous electricity supply might indeed come about one day soon to the beleaguered residents of poor Freetown.

Currently, Freetown awaits the execution of the promise.
