Launching of Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL)
Introduction of Chairperson of the Occasion
Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden
Thursday 20th November 2008
|A Woman of Substance: Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden at British Council yesterday evening|
Our Chairman for today is a household name throughout the length and breadth of Sierra Leone. It is a name synonymous with Strong Women and also with the Media and so it is but appropriate that one of Sierra Leone’s well recognized strong women who is also a media person herself, be the Chairman at today’s occasion of celebrating Women in the Media in Sierra Leone.
Our Chairman first came to the National Limelight when she became the first and so far, the only woman to win an elections at the University of Sierra Leone to head a Students’ Union and later became the first female Vice President of the National Union of Sierra Leone Students. Since then, she has consistently emerged as a force to be reckoned with notwithstanding her female gender. She has been a source of inspiration to many young ladies and I dare say, men as well.
Although she trained and qualified as a fully fledged medical doctor who holds two academic degrees in Medicine, our Chairman for today, had dedicated the better part of the last few years of her life towards the promotion of journalism in Sierra Leone and even beyond.
Our Chairman’s work in journalism has taken her name to every corner of Sierra Leone and all around the world and this led to her being deservedly honoured last year with an enviable and coveted National Honour as an Officer of the Order of the Rokel, for not only her work in Journalism but also for her dedicated service in the promotion of Internet Information Technology, an integral part of modern day communications.
Our Chairman is currently the only woman in Sierra Leone who is not only successfully owning a National Newspaper as Proprietress of the Awareness Times, one of the leading mainstream newspapers in contemporary Sierra Leone but has acted as the Publisher of serious news reports that have impacted positively on various aspects of life in Sierra Leone; the most recent being her successful championing of the cause of a poor female boat-owner who was in detention at the Pademba Road Prisons.
Ladies and Gentlemen, as I said before, our Chairman for today is a household name needing little introduction. It was in light of this her outstanding and distinguished character that WIMSAL decided to request this distinguished female citizen to be our Chairman for today’s occasion.
So, I present to you, our Chairman for today, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden.
