I wish to add my voice on the current Zimbabwean tragedy. I would appreciate if you would print in your newspaper my short comment on the situation in your country;
Allow me to congratulate Alex Wamagaisa and other prominent African leaders for expressing views on the tragedy of African leadership crisis. I don’t think I need to dwell too much on the Zimbabwean dilemma since most of us (Africans) are amazed and horrified that it took so long for our leaders to come out in the open to tell President Mugabe he is wrong in holding his country and people at ransom. I would however now like to add my voice hereto:
As a professional military leader (now retired) who participated in selecting the best of Kenyan soldiers to participate in Zimbabwe’s peacekeeping (1980) prior to Independence, I am ashamed of the Zimbabwean Generals.
I myself a retired general, helped turn round Sierra Leone and Liberia under the UN flag as a peacekeeper and the Force Commander. Although I commanded a host of African and foreign very senior Generals, I never dreamed of a situation where professional generals would support a president who flouts the very tenets of democracy.
It is a shame that one of the current Zimbabwean top generals (no names) served under the UN flag as a Force Commander in the Congo at the time I was also a Force Commander in Sierra Leone! I know the general and he knows me reasonably well.
My message to the Zimbabwean general and his colleagues is - "my brothers you are a disgrace to your people and Africa’’.
You have a responsibility to influence credible and peaceful change in your country.
Lt General (Retired)
