Police in Port Loko have confirmed on Wednesday 17th August 2011 that dozens of youths were arrested at the Sanda Magbolotor Port Loko district, including a Councillor and the driver of a Member of Parliament.
The Local Unit Commander in Port Loko, Police Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Foday Dumbuya has confirmed that the arrest was as a result of a massive riot perpetrated by the youths few days ago following the discovery of iron ore deposits in a village in Port Loko.
ASP Dumbuya said as tradition could have it the whole community headed by their Regent Chief, Chief Bai Sama agreed to organise a traditional feast in honour of the forefathers of the land before commencing any mining activity on the land. The ASP said the traditional advice was opposed by certain youths who saw the process as lengthy and were not satisfied with some parts of the agreement.
As a result, they stormed the residence of the chief and interrupted the ceremony, causing riots and chaos in the whole village.
He revealed that at the moment, police are investigating causes of the riot.
Sources say this ugly incident has attracted the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources and the Minister himself is reportedly planning to pay an assessment visit to the scene to assess the status of the iron ore deposits.
