The 2007 elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Constituency 07 in Kailahun District (Segbwema and environs) representing the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), Honorable Robin Faley will tomorrow Thursday 27th September 2012, officially declare his membership for the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) party in Segbwema Town following which he will be awarded the symbol to contest for Parliament under the APC. It can be recalled that Faley was recently charged by the Police for fraudulent registration of underage girls.
Speaking to Awareness Times last evening, Hon. Robin Faley said the entire case about him forging birth certificates was an orchestration by SLPP members who wanted to remove SLPP symbol from him. He said all the school girls who were charged for the matter of the forgeries have few weeks ago been acquitted and discharged but before they were discharged, they gave testimony to the court that they did not receive the forged documents from the honourable MP but from another man who has since gone into hiding.
According to Faley, the schoolgirls were arrested in the registration line with the documents in their possession but they were not arrested whilst trying to be registered. For that reason, the Magistrate could not find them guilty of fraudulent registration as they could not be convicted for merely standing in a registration line. He said the Magistrate opined that the police should have waited to either arrest the girls at the height of tendering the forged documents for registration or after they had used the forgeries to register. So, he said, all the girls were all acquitted.
However, Faley told Awareness Times that the testimony of the girls and their school teachers all “roundly exonerated” him so he expected to also be discharged and acquitted as there was “absolutely not a shred of evidence to link me with the issue”.
Hon. Faley claims the entire incident was handiwork of “SLPP agents who wanted to remove the SLPP symbol from me but because they know I am too popular to lose the symbol, they hatched up this criminal allegation to get the police to molest me. They left me in jail for 8 days as if I was a worthless human being but now they will regret it. I am going to turn Segbwema bright red,” Hon. Faley insisted.
Segbwema is the home town of SLPP’s National Chairman and Leader, Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin and is considered as one of the strongholds of the SLPP in the 2007 general elections. Hon. Faley has told Awareness Times that he would be joined by “several dozens” of other SLPP executive members of Segbwema as well as “thousands” of SLPP supporters and sympathizers to handover their SLPP membership cards and collect APC membership cards.
He said his decision to join the APC was not a one-man decision but was taken after extensive consultations with his people “especially those from Segbwema”. According to him, in several consultative meetings with his people, unanimous agreements were met for “the whole of Segbwema” to declare for the APC prior to the November 17 polls.
Hon. Faley said the decision came after the people of Segbwema have assessed the transformation and development strides so far accomplished by the APC under the leadership of President Koroma as compared to the eleven years of SLPP rule. He said President Koroma is a development oriented President and he (Hon. Faley) is also a development oriented Member of Parliament who wishes to give his support to the President’s Agenda for Prosperity.
The Honorable assured that when he will officially joined the APC tomorrow, he will ensure that “Segbwema and the entire Kailahun district”, vote for President Koroma and the APC in the November elections.
APC’s National Campaign Coordinator, Mr. Leonard B. Koroma who also spoke to this press yesterday, primarily welcomed Hon. Faley to the party on behalf of the President and people of the APC. He said from all indications, it is an open secret that the SLPP has been hit by a political volcanic eruption in many directions. Mr. Koroma noted that President Koroma is a president for all people, regardless of nationality, tribe, religious and political affiliations. He said no part of Sierra Leone including Segbwema people wished to be left behind off the trail of “such a wonderful leader”. He cited the completion of the central Mosque in Segbwema and the ongoing Kailahun roads construction projects as some of President Koroma’s legacies in the Kailahun district.
Also speaking to Awareness Times was Chief Moijueh Gbetuwa Vandy, the former SLPP Eastern Regional Spokesman who defected to the APC over two years ago. He said the news of Robin “going red” has turned Segbwema “upside down with lots of excitement; the youths and women are all very happy. It will be a very clean sweep for the APC”.
An SLPP Womens Leader for a section of the township, phoned Awareness Times to say, “we are going to follow the young Robin anywhere he goes. Even if he goes into the water, we will follow him into the water but we are going to go anywhere he goes”.
However, a local businessman in the town has stated no such signs are visible as yet.
He said though the people might come around, many of the residents he has been speaking to, expressed that they were not happy with the move of Hon. Robin Faley to join the APC.
He said the only people openly expressing happiness were a handful of “those who are already APC”.
Awareness Times will be dispatching a top team of journalists to the area tomorrow to independently cover the occasion of the declaration of Hon. Robin Faley.
We will bring you the Truthful analysis of what we perceive to be happening on the ground.
