The Modernization and Expansion of the Lungi International Airport Project was borne out of the vision of the Government of The Republic of Sierra Leone to radically upgrade and change the appearance and quality of Sierra Leone’s First Port of Call, which has so negatively affected the image of the Country.
Barrows Construction Company Ltd. and Ovie Arup, both internationally acclaimed firms, associated with projects such as Heathrow Terminal 5, Beijing Airport, and many more, were contracted to handle the project which was aimed at transforming the then Lungi International Airport to a rejuvenated and spirited airport of international standards, ready to welcome the World.
The new Expanded and Modernized Lungi Airport:
The old airport was plagued with myriad of issues not only from its unwelcoming appearance, but also from the inability of being a functional and security compliant environment The condition of the airport was a direct threat to the flow of international investors to Sierra Leone as it turned off and turned away many visitors and investors from Sierra Leone.
The newly modernized Lungi International airport has proved to be a success story talked about by all recent users of the airport. Though operations are yet to commence at the new wing, the right impact has been created to boost the confidence of visitors and citizens coming through our international gateway.Endorsements abound from the international airlines operating in Sierra Leone, other service providers at the airport and passengers in general have acclaimed the project to be a timely success story that fits with the Governments Agenda for Change efforts.
All modern amenities such as enhanced security, CCTV, Fire Alarms, PA system, full air conditioning, have been put in place to compliment the new facilities, which include 4 VIP Lounges with Air Conditioning, 2 Duty Free shops, 8 airline offices, massive space for immigration, security and customs, 4 boarding gates, 14 check in counters, Flight Information Display system, 3 restaurants, convenience shops, bar, new baggage conveyors, fully computerized check in, shatter proof windows, and many more have earned the new Lungi Airport accolades and praises. With this development, Sierra Leone is ready to welcome many more international airlines, many of whom have already shown keen interest.
