Building Resources Across Communities (BRAC) an International Non Governmental Organization working in selected African countries and the world over has embarked on the second phase of nutrition awareness campaign in the Kenema, Blama, Tongo and other parts of the country.

According to BRAC Area Agriculture Coordinator working in Kenema district, Sylvester Abdul Manshell, Kenema District recorded the highest malnutrition rate especially among children according to recent survey conducted in the district by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and partners. He said the people in the district should not only focus on the eating carbohydrate but ensure that they balance their diet with other groups of food especially fruit and vegetable to alleviate the malnutrition problem.

Sylvester Abdul Manshell urged pregnant women and lactating mothers to eat well as that will help them live a healthier life. He cautioned them not to embark on the intake of excess carbohydrate but rather eat fish, egg and other food items which she referred to as balanced diet.

The Regional Agriculture Coordinator, Golam Azam said the theme of the campaign is EAT HEALTHY, STAY HEALTHY and with this message they will ensure that the Kenema community would change their feeding habits. He disclosed that BRAC started in Bangladesh in 1972 and has spread in many African countries including Sierra Leone.

Golam Azam said BRAC as an organization is operating on various components including agriculture, micro financing, nutrition, and back yard gardening to enable the powerless women, to be proactive and help themselves out of poverty.

The area livestock coordinator, M. S Fofanah  said BRAC has trained a large number of  farmers  in  livestock and backyard gardening skills and  local poultry farmers are  fully supported with inputs  to improve on  their farming which will help  them  sustain their families.

A representative from the Ministry of Agriculture forestry and food security, Steven Amara who chaired the ceremony appreciated BRAC for its bold step in complementing the Ministry in the nation’s food sufficiency drive. He said this awareness raising campaign will help farmers to know how to grow their own food, and the kind of food to eat in the correct proportion at the time needed. He said Agriculture is not an easy job because of its labour-intensity while encouraging farmers to continue the work with BRAC.
