BRAC-SL, a Bangladeshi-based NGO operating in Sierra Leone, with funds from Global Fund through Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has on Friday, 8th February, 2013 ended a four-day Training of Trainers workshop for Community Health Clubs (CHC) on the theme "Malaria Free Salone" at the National Stadium Hostels.

Giving the overview of the training, the Regional Health Coordinator BRAC-SL, Khan Mohammad Bathwi Rashid said the training was for CHC leaders to replicate what they have learnt to their members in their various communities. He said the training has three key messages which are, prevent malaria during pregnancy; sleep under treated mosquito net and their main focus which is to get rid of malaria by 2016. He further revealed that there aim is to raise awareness on malaria through community sensitization and outreaches.

"At the end of the training," he went on, "Community Health Club leaders are expected to go back to their various communities and train their community people in order to achieve the aim of getting rid of malaria by 2016."

BRAC operates in the Western Area, Kenema and Tonkolili but according to Dr. Regina Julaina Kain the training was purely meant for the Western Area where they are dealing with 69 Wards. She said for an effective campaign of freeing Sierra Leone from malaria, they have already formed 96 Community Health Clubs made up of 10 members per club. These clubs, she went on, will be responsible for the sensitization of their communities about the danger of malaria and the benefits of living in a malaria free community.

The objectives of the campaign, she revealed is to help communities learn about malaria and adopt the three priorities which are; malaria preventive behavior, use of long lasting insecticides nets and care seeking from a recognized health facility within 24hours of symptoms. The campaign, she added, is also aimed at empowering the CHCs and School Health Clubs (SHSs) with the focus to develop skill in behavior change promotion with focus on malaria prevention.

She also disclosed that they had also trained SHS leaders who will in turn train their colleagues in schools and that by so doing, the campaign will spread nationwide. She maintained that 30 SHSs have already been formed.

Several participants expressed their desire to take the campaign to their different communities in a bid to free Sierra Leone from malaria.
