His Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on Tuesday 19th March 2013, received Letters of Credence from the new High Commissioner of the United Kingdom (UK), Great Britain and Ireland to Sierra Leone, Mr. Peter West, at the Credentials Hall, State House in Freetown.

President Koroma expressed honour to accept the Letters of Credence by which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second has accredited Mr. West as High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Sierra Leone.

He said Britain and Sierra Leone have deep historical and cultural ties, adding that Sierra Leone traces its ideals of freedom and justice to a joint enterprise between Africans and British citizens to end slavery, spread legitimate trade, and the worthier values of faith, education and security.

More than two centuries after that historic compact, President Koroma went on, these ideals still power the relationship between Great Britain and Sierra Leone, adding that today British companies are very much engaged in the economic transformation of Sierra Leone.

"Today, Her Majesty's Government, through IMMAT and now ISAT, is engaged in entrenching security in our land; and Britain's Department for International Development is supporting us meet challenges in the health, justice, extractive and other sectors" said President Koroma, adding; "let me, through you, transmit to Her Majesty's Government, and the people of Britain, our deep appreciation of Britain's invaluable support for our democracy, our security, and socio-economic transformation".

The Chief Executive Officer said Sierra Leoneans very much value their relationship with Britain and that they believe that the historic compact is on a sounder footing for greater engagement that will be mutually beneficial to the citizens and governments of this countries.

He assured that his government aim to boost trade with Britain, improve transparent relationships between British private companies operating in Sierra Leone and the citizens of Sierra Leone, and above all, act towards greater reforms of the country's doing business environment to attract more foreign direct investment.

President Koroma said Sierra Leone will continue to boost security with support from ISAT, continue to strengthen its democracy, continue to act as a force for peace and freedom in Africa and the entire world, and that the country looks forward to the support of its friendliest of countries, Great Britain, as it commence the implementation of the Agenda for Prosperity.

Speaking earlier, High Commissioner Peter West said the UK is proud and privileged to have been able to contribute positively to the transformation of Sierra Leone over the years.

The envoy went on to note that the successful conduct of last year's polls sent a clear and significant signal about Sierra Leone's status.

"The draw down of UNIPSIL, the transition of IMATT to ISAT, and the inception of your admirable Agenda for Prosperity will also be important milestones in Sierra Leone's path to progress," said the High Commissioner.
