University of Sierra Leone announces current available courses

UNIVERSITY OF SIERRA LEONE

APPLICATIONS ARE HEREBY INVITED FOR ADMISSION INTO CERTIFICATE, DIPLOMA AND UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE COURSES TENABLE AT FOURAH BAY COLLEGE, THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE & ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES AND THE INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT FOR THE 2013/14 SESSION.

 

Entry Requirements

       

·       Undergraduate  Degree Programmes

The University’s entry requirements for degree programmes are five GCE’O’ levels/WASSCE credits, including English Language, obtained in not more than two sittings.  However, there are also faculty requirements for admission into the various faculties and departmental requirements for offering certain modules.

 

In the case of the West African Examinations Council Exams, only grades ranging from 1 to 6 are recognized as G.C.E.’O’ level credit passes.  For W.A.S.S.C.E. it is A1-C6, while for the Associate Examinations Board (London G C E) only a C or better is recognized.

4 WASSCE/GCE credits including English Language, except for the Certificate in Population Analysis and Social Statistics, the Special Certificate in Mass Communication, the Special Certificate in Library and Archive Studies, and the Certificate in Early Childhood Care Education.

3.1.   FACULTY OF ARTS

 

·       Degree Courses

 

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

Credit of at least 5 (five) subjects at School Certificate/General Certificate of Education (GCE) ‘O’ level/WASSCE including at least a credit 4 or C5 in English Language.  These must be obtained in not more than two sittings with at least 3 (three) of the 5 subjects in the Humanities (Arts Subjects).

 

·       Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication

The same requirements as for the Bachelor of Arts degree except that in addition applicants must pass a special examination English Language (diagnostic test)in order to be eligible for further consideration.

 

·       Bachelor of Arts in Library Studies

The same requirements as for the Bachelor of Arts Degree.

 

 

·       Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education

The same as for the Bachelor of Arts Degree.

 

·       Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education

The same as for the Bachelor of Arts Degree.

 

·        Certificate, Diploma and Licentiate Courses

 

·       Certificate in Adult Education

Credit at G.C.E. ‘O’ level (or its equivalence) in 4 subjects including English Language; preference will be given to candidates with experience in Adult Education.

 

·       Diploma in Adult Education

4 WASSCE/GCE credits, with each being a minimum credit 6/C6 including English Language, in not more than two sittings.  Holders of other relevant qualifications, e.g. the Certificate in        Adult Education, who have demonstrated extra mural competences, may be accepted for an interview to determine their   eligibility.

 

·       Diploma in Cultural Studies (2 Years)

4 (four) G.C.E. ‘O’ level WASSCE credits, including English Language and History, in not more than two sittings.  Holders of other relevant qualifications e.g. The Teachers’ Certificate, who have demonstrated aptitude in the arts or culture skills, may be accepted for an interview to determine their eligibility.

 

·       License in Divinity

A three-year course is provided within the Faculty of Arts leading to the License in Divinity in preparation for the Christian Ministry.  Candidates of any denomination may apply.

 

The minimum requirements for admission are 4(four) GCE/WASSCE credit passes, obtained in not more than two sittings.

 

·      Diploma in Mass Communication (Two Years)

The entry requirements are 4 (four) G.C.E.’O’ level/WASSCE subjects, including a credit in English.  Applicants are, in addition, required to take a special test in English (diagnostic test) and if they pass, face an interview panel to determine their disposition and commitment to Journalism and Mass Communication

 

·      Diploma in Library Studies (Two Years)

Same as for Mass Communication except that applicants are not required to take a diagnostic test.

 

·   Diploma in Early Childhood Care Education (Two Years)

                4 WASSCE/GCE credits including English Language, in not                  more than two sittings.

 

·   Special Certificate in Library, Archive and Information                    Studies

 

·   Candidates who have at least five years work experience in a library, documentation centre, registry, archive depository, book store or in a related institution.

·   School leavers with passes in WASSCE subjects including English Language not below a grade C6, in not more than two sittings, interested in pursuing a careers in library and information work.

3.2.   FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE

 

Degree Courses Only

The minimum requirements are 5 (five) GCE‘O’ levels or WASSCE including Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics Grades 1-5 /A1-C6 and English Language, at least 5/C6.  In addition to the above requirements, holders of ‘A’ level passes in Mathematics and Physics or Ordinary National Diploma with at least two years of relevant work experience may be admitted into Year II.  Holders of the Higher National Diploma with at least two years of relevant work experience may be admitted into Year III provided they meet the GCE ‘O’ level or WASSCE requirements indicated above.

 

Applicants with other relevant qualifications of equivalent ratings may also be considered.

 

3.3.   FACULTY OF PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES

 

·       Degree Courses

 

·   Bachelor of Science

The minimum requirements for admission to the faculty are five credits obtained at West African Examinations Council (WAEC) ‘O’ level, or West African Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE).The compulsory subjects for matriculation of students into the faculty are:  English and Mathematics plus any three science subjects from the following list:  Additional Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science and Geography.

 

·   Bachelor of Science with Engineering Option

 

Same as for the Bachelor of Science Degree

 

·   Bachelor of Science in Education

Same as for the Bachelor of Science Degree, except that this programme is run in collaboration with the Institute of Education and Extra Mural Studies.

 

·       Certificate and Diploma in Statistics

 

4 WASSCE/GCE credits, including English Language and Mathematics.  Work experience in Statistics and data related areas may provide a candidate with an added advantage.

3.4.   FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES & LAW

       

·       Degree Courses

 

·       Bachelor of Social Science

Candidates must have a Grade 4/C5 or better in English Language and 6/C6 in Mathematics.  In addition they must have at least 3 social science subjects with a minimum of 4/C5e.g. Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Economics etc.

 

·       Bachelor of Social Science (Social Work)

Same as for the Bachelor of Social Science except that Mathematics is not a requirement.

 

·       Bachelor of Social Science (Peace and Conflict Studies)

Same as for the Bachelor of Social Science except that Mathematics is not a requirement.

 

·       .Bachelor of Social Science in Population & Development            Studies

Same as Bachelor of Social Science.

 

·       Bachelor of Laws

Candidates must have a good first degree in any discipline or a very good WASSCE/GCE (5 credits – Grade A1 - C4), with a minimum of 3/C4 in English Language.

 

A very good honours degree is an added advantage.

 

·       Certificate and Diploma Courses

 

·       Certificate in Population Analysis and Social Statistics

 

5 G.C.E. ‘O’ level/WASSCE credits including English and Mathematics or Statistics.  Candidates without the above qualifications but with at least five years experience in population related work may apply.

 

·       Diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies (2 years)

The entry requirements are 4 ‘O’ levels/WASSCE credits including English Language with a Grade 5/C6.

 

B.     COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AND ALLIED HEALTH  SCIENCES

 

1.     FACULTY OF NURSING

 

a.     Basic Nursing Programmes

·   B.Sc. (Hons) - Duration 4 years

 

First degree or higher in science, social science or health related discipline or a minimum of five G.C.E “O’ Levels/WASSCE credits (1-4/A1-C5) including English Language and any 3 of the following science subjects:  Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics in not more than two sittings.

 

For Registered Nurses, an RN qualification, plus five G.C.E “O’ Levels/WASSCE (with credit not below C6) including English Language and any 2 of the following science subjects:  Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics in not more than two sittings.

 

ii.      Nursing Diploma (SRN— Duration 3 Years)

At least five (5) G.C.E.’O’ Level/WASSCE  Credits including English Language, Biology, Physics/Mathematics and Chemistry obtained in not more than two (2) sittings.            

 

OR

 

Candidates with an SECHN qualification , who also must possess at least five (5) G.C.E.’O’ Level/WASSCE  with grades C6 or better or its equivalence including English Language and Biology and any 2 of the following subjects: Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry obtained in not more than two (2) sittings.  

 

iii.     Certificate in Nursing (SECHN— Duration 2½ Years)

Candidates must possess at least two (2) G.C.E.’O’ Level/WASSCE  with grades C6 or better or its equivalence obtained in not more than two (2) sittings.   They must have passed both the Nurses and Midwives Board of Sierra Leone Entrance Examination. They must also pass the COMAHS, Screening Examination/Interview.

 

b.     Post-Basic NURSING PROGRAMMES

i.      Certificate in Ophthalmic Nursing—Duration 1 year

        Candidates must have successfully completed the Certificate in

        Nursing course SECHN/SRN/BScN plus at least 3 years work

        experience.

 

ii    Diploma in Nursing Education(Nurse Tutors                                   Course)

Candidates must have completed the Diploma in Nursing (SRN), BScN and must be registered with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Sierra Leone or an equivalent body. (Duration 2 years).

.

iii.     Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing—Duration 1 year

Candidates must have successfully completed the                    Certificate in        

Nursing course SECHN/SRN/BScN plus at least 3 years work

experience/ five (5) G.C.E.’O’ Level/WASSCE  credits in the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, English language, Mathematics and any other two subjects obtained in not more than two (2) sittings.  

 

iv.     Certificate in Mental Health Nursing—Duration 1 year

        Candidates must possess the Certificate in Nursing course SECHN/SRN/BScN plus at least 3 years work experience. Must be registered with the Nurses and Midwives’ Board of Sierra Leone.

 

v.     Diploma in Mental Health Nursing (1½ years and 6 months for Certificate in Mental Health holders)

        Candidates must have completed the SRN/Diploma in                       Nursing/ BScN

They must also possess at least 3 credits at WASSCE or equivalence in not more than 2 sittings. Must be registered with the Nurses and Midwives’ Board of Sierra Leone

 

II.     FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES

 

·   Bachelor of Medicine (MBChB)

Direct entry into 1st Year

·       5 (Five) G.C.E. ‘O’ level/WASSCE credits:  C5, or better, in English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Physics in not more than two sittings.

 

·       A good degree in the Pure and Applied Sciences from a recognized University.

 

·       Successful completion, in a recognized university, of the Pure and Applied Sciences Year I in the following subjects:  Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Physics provided passes had been previously obtained at the G.C.E. ‘O’ level or WASSCE with credits in English, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, Mathematics with C5 or better, and at least C6 in English (in not more than two sittings.)

 

·       Successful completion of Pre-Med II level with a grade point average of 60%/better.

 

·   B.Sc. (Hons) Biomedical Science

 

Applicants must have the following:-

 

5 (Five) G.C.E. ‘O’ level/WASSCE Credits, 5/C6 or better in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

 

·   Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science (2 Years)

·       At least (4) four G.C.E. ‘O’ level or WASSCE credits, two of which must be in the Sciences.

 

·       At least (2) two years work experience within a government hospital or a recognized private health related institution.

 

III.    FACULTY OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES

 

a.      Diploma in Pharmacy

Applicants must have:-

 

·       Four (4) G.C.E. ‘O’ levels/WASSCE credits in subjects relevant to the course i.e. Chemistry, English Language and two other science subjects.

 

·       An entrance examination may be set in the case where the full requirements are not met.  Permission to take the entrance examination is determined by the number and nature of the G.C.E. ‘O’ levels/WASSCE grades.

 

b.      B.Sc. (Hons) Pharmacy – B.Pharm

Applicants must have

 

·       5 (Five) G.C.E. ‘O’ level/WASSCE credits in not more than two (2) sittings in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and English Language

OR

·       G.C.E. ‘A’ level passes (or equivalent) in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

 

OR

·       Five (5) G.C.E. ‘O’ level/WASSCE credits including English Language and two (2) science subjects, one of which should be Health Science.

 

C.     INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND                     MANAGEMENT

 

        Undergraduate Courses

·       B.Sc. in Applied Accounting

·       B.Sc. in Financial Services

·       B.Sc. in Business Administration

·       B.Sc. in Information Systems

·       B.Sc. in Governance and Leadership

·       B.Sc. in Entrepreneurship Development

·       Five WASSCE/G.C.E. ‘O’ levels credits with Grade 5/C6 or better including English Language and Mathematics, in not more than 2 sittings. Preference will be given to candidates with commercial background.

 

D.     ADVICE TO PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS WHO ARE AWAITING RESULTS

 

IF YOU DO NOT MEET THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NOW BUT EXPECT TO DO SO BEFORE OCTOBER 2012 PLEASE APPLY NOW UNDER THE CATEGORY “AWAITING RESULTS” (FOR WHICH PROVISION IS MADE IN THE APPLICATION FORM), AS ADMISSIONS WILL NOT BE REOPENED ONCE THE PROCESS ENDS.

 

E.     METHOD OF APPLICATION

 

If you require further clarification(s) on the courses offered by the various colleges of the University, please direct your enquires to the Office of the Registrar, University of Sierra Leone, A.J. Momoh Street, Tower Hill (IPAM Campus).   A non-refundable application fee of Le200, 000 is charged and payment should be made at the Standard Chartered Bank, Lightfoot Boston Street, Freetown, and the payment slip submitted to the University Finance Office, NCTVA Building, A.J. Momoh Street, Tower Hill, Freetown, where a receipt will be issued for collection of the application package from the Office of the Registrar.

 

The completed application form, together with photocopies of supporting documents (birth certificate, testimonials, results) must reach the Registrar, University of Sierra Leone, at the address indicated in the preceding paragraph.

       

F.      CLOSING DATE FOR THE RECEIPT OF APPLICATION FORMS IS FRIDAY 16TH JULY, 2013.                                                       

G.     Successful applicants will be required to pay their fees in full not later than the end of the 1st week in October, 2013; otherwise their offers will be withdrawn and given to the next deserving applicants

 

H.    Holders of results that are five (5) years old or above must produce documentary evidence to indicate ownership of such results. Such applicants should in addition write on their application envelopes “Old Results”

 

·       The question of transferring from one faculty to another does not arise.  A candidate must meet the entry requirements of a faculty before he/she may be considered for admission into that faculty.

 

·   Successful completion of a certificate or a diploma programme does not necessarily make one eligible for consideration for a degree programme as both the certificate and the diploma programme are terminal.

.

·   Candidates wishing to apply to pursue postgraduate courses are advised to make enquires at the OFFICE OF THE DEAN, SCHOOL POSTGRADUATE STUDIES, Fourth Floor, University House, Fourah Bay College, Mount Aureol, Mountain Rural District.

 

·   Finally, applicants are strongly advised to read carefully the guidelines on the filling of the application form which form part of the application package, as application forms not properly filled may not be processed.
