Kenema’s Capitol Trading Expects A Bumper Harvest of Cacao & Coffee in Sierra Leone

The Managing Director of Capitol Trading Company, Hassan Hashim of 51 Hangha Road, Kenema, Sierra Leone has told Awareness Times in Kenema that the projected export of harvested cacao and coffee produce for this year would be three fold the amount of last year’s own.

Mr. Hashim made the exciting disclosure to Awareness Times last week during a conducted tour of his cacao processing and packaging unit. He explained that before the war years, Sierra Leone used to export tens of thousands of tons of cacao and cocoa but after the war years, this had greatly dropped to less than ten thousand tons each. However, he said the increased return of citizens to their farms, had resulted in an increasing level of produce being available for export.

Additionally, Hashim insists that produce from Guinea and Liberia was now being brought into Sierra Leone rather than the other way around as Sierra Leonean produce buyers like himself now offered higher prices than their Guinean and Liberian compatriots.

Also, he said some lucrative farms located inside Guinea and Liberia were nearer to Sierra Leonean produce buyers than the buyers in those countries and for transportation reasons, it was cost effective to sell them inside Sierra Leone.

“We expect to export three times the amount of cacao and cocoa than we exported out last year and this figure is just going to go upwards. Kailahun, Pujehun and Bo are robustly producing cacao and cocoa,” Hassan Hashim said adding that he has decades of experience in the business.

The Bags are weighed as each one should be exactly 62.5kilograms so that a total of 320 bags will make up 20,000kgs (20 tonnes) that are placed in any one container shipment.
