At State House yesterday 9th October 2008, President Koroma formally installed the new Chief of Defence Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Alfred C. Nelson Williams, who at the same time was promoted from Colonel to Major General.
The new CDS took the oath of office, promising to “support, uphold and maintain the Constitution of Sierra Leone as by law established”, to which President Koroma responded, “by the powers vested in me as Commander-In-Chief, I hereby decorate you as Major General today the 9th day of October 2008,” before congratulating him.
Defence Minister Paolo Conteh, in his remarks, also congratulated the new Army Chief, describing his appoinment as a great achievement, considering the fact that he joined the army as a private soldier. The minister said the lesson to be learnt was that with dedication, loyalty, and determination, the sky would be the limit for any soldier. He also used the occasion to announce the decision of the Defence Council to grant promotion to two officers: Colonel Kestoria Kabia becomes the first woman to be promoted to Brigadier, while Colonel S.O. Williams has now also become a Brigadier.
Giving the vote of thanks, Brigadier Nelson Williams proffered gratitude to God, emphasizing that under his leadership “I’ll enhance the standards of RSLAF…motivating them to excellent heights. Your Excellency, the confidence you have reposed in me will never be misplaced. May God bless us all.”
In attendance were senior military officers of RSLAF and IMATT.
