The award ceremony, organized in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Football Association, was chaired by Alhaji Unisa Alim Sesay (aka Awoko).
Alhaji Sesay expressed appreciation to Africell for sponsoring the country’s the 2007/08 Premier League and encouraged the company to continue its sponsorship of the league.
“This sponsorship is very timely and laudable, considering the fact that it came at a time when regular sponsors of the league decided to terminate support for the league,” he said, while congratulating the Sierra Leone Ports Authority Football Team for winning the tournament.
Africell’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Joe Amara Bangali (Jnr) expressed his company’s commitment towards the promotion and development of sports in the country.
He says football is very important to any country.
“It is not just a mere enjoyment facility, but is also used as an instrument for the promotion of regional and global peace,” he said, adding that worldwide recognition can be obtained if a country is successful in international football competitions.
“Victory in this competition will not only be a victory for the players but also victory for all Sierra Leoneans,” he said, adding that it was due to recognition of this fact that Africell resolved to contribute to the development of football in Sierra Leone.
“We believe that our national team should be provided with every opportunity to take part in international competitions and we need to support players back home,” he says, adding that creating on arena whereby people can develop and display their skills should be of paramount concern to everyone.
“It is our hope that the premier league will provide the players with an opportunity to develop their skills to such a level that some of them will later on move forward to play for some of the top teams in the world,” he said.
Mr. Bangali later presented a cheque of Le 42,500,000 to the Sierra Leone Football Association as the second and final payment of the financial contribution for the 2007/2008 Africell Premier League Season.
