Delegates for the upcoming West Africa regional conference of the African Socialist International are expected to start arriving in Sierra Leone today Monday October 13, 2008.
A first batch of delegates comprising of Guineans and Liberians are due to arrive in Freetown later tonight ahead of the conference. This was revealed to the Awareness Times by the Africanist Movement, the organization that is hosting the said event.
The Africanist Movement says all other delegates for the conference are due to arrive on Friday October 17, 2008.
The conference is scheduled to take place from October 20-22, 2008 at the Miatta Conference Centre, Youyi Building in Freetown.
It is said to be one of the largest gatherings of African socialists and revolutionaries in West Africa during the last fifty years that is bringing together representatives of African organizations in and out of Africa.
Director of the Africanist Movement, Chernoh Alpha M. Bah says the conference is part of an international process geared towards organizing African workers and peasants to build and consolidate the worldwide movement for African liberation.
"All around the world African people are involved in struggle to overturn the parasitic relationship that is imposed on us by the United States and Europe but what was lacking was an international organization that would coordinate and lead our separate struggles into a common direction," Bah says, adding that the African Socialist International is the organization that is capable of providing this required leadership to overcome the challenges confronting the liberation and unification of Africa.
He says the African liberation movement cannot win if it continues with the usual balkanized approaches to the struggle.
"Our efforts should be directed towards the struggle for a truly liberated and unified Africa without boarders and the numerous descriptions imposed on us by imperialism and its neocolonial agents," he stated, adding that the unification and consolidation of the African nation requires a radical shift from the so-called orthodox pan-africanist tendency that continues to hinder genuine efforts and aspirations.
