In collaboration with the Freetown City Council, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs will today, Wednesday 15th October 2008 end a two day stakeholders workshop to discuss the three gender Acts.
The workshop is held at the basement of the Freetown City Council Headquarters, Wallace Johnson Street in Freetown.
Acting Deputy Chief Development Officer in the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Madam Patricia Mansaray says it is mandatory for her ministry to partner with the Freetown City Council.
“The Decentralization Act is poised to give power to the people,” she said, while adding that it was for this reason that her ministry considered it mandatory to devolve staff members to the council.
She disclosed that their partnership with council is aimed at addressing five main issues, which include disabilities, child welfare, probation, family and education issues.
In his statement, Principal Social Development Officer in the Planning Section, Mr. Mohamed Unisa Conteh says the main purpose of the workshop is to sensitize participants on the three gender Acts, Devolution of Estate, Registration of Marriage and Divorce and Domestic Violence.
“It is hoped that at the end of the workshop, participants will serve as ambassadors to their different wards,” he said, adding that they will teach their folks about what the bills entail.
He pointed out that by 2009 all funding with regards to the issues will go directly to the council.
The workshop attracted over 50 participants from various wards within the municipality of Freetown.
