Mariama Kamara, a 16 year-old girl and a JSS3 pupil of the St. Joseph’s Convent in Makeni has won the star prize–a Mountain Gear Bicycle of the Kids Waves Project during the ‘One for All, All for One’ quiz competition over the weekend at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) FM88.0, Mena Hill, Makeni.
Mariama Kamara secured 23 points from all the four rounds of the quiz competition.
After being declared the winner, Mariama Kamara thanked the organizers, Plan Sierra Leone, Nokia and other partners, noting that she was happy to emerge as the winner.
"The quiz competition is educative and it has broaden my knowledge not only on ROC but other current affair issues locally and the world at large," she said in a happy mood, while adding that her success came as a result of intensive reading of all the manuals of Pikin Dem Voice Project.
She disclosed that she was just incorporated into the implementing partner of the project few months ago and called on fellow contestants to attach all seriousness to the training in order to yield the benefit of the project.
Contestants from Binkolo, Bombali Shebora, Roboreh, Batkanu and Paki Masabong chiefdoms, who attained second to sixth positions in the competition where given school bags and other learning materials..
However, brand new radio sets were also distributed as consolation prizes to all 16 contestants from the 8 chiefdoms to encourage them to be listening to Pikin Dem Voice show.
Manager of SLBS FM88.0, Alimamy o. Bangura called on the children of Bombali District to concentrate on their education as quiz competitions of such are very educative.
"The 16 participants should embrace the Kids Waves project for a better understanding of the purpose of it," he said, while advising participants who performed poorly to intensify their study in order to perform better in subsequent quiz competitions.
It should be noted that the ‘One for All, All for one, quiz competition is part of the activities to be undertaken during the implementation of the Kids Waves Project in Bombali District. The project itself is designed to give children the opportunity to air their voices on issues affecting their well being in their respective communities where the project is operating especially on child rights issues.
