A Western diplomat has expressed serious concern over the quality of journalism that is being practiced by certain sections of the print media. During discussions over lunch with a staff of this newspaper in Freetown yesterday, the diplomat who is attached to one of the Western Embassies, stated that he could not understand why some local media personnel referred to themselves as professional journalists as they did not fit to be termed as such.
The diplomat, whose name we will not mention for obvious reasons, was particularly scathing of Olu Gordon (Peep!) who regularly uses foul language in his newspaper pages under the guise of ‘satiric journalism’.
"I have been in Sierra Leone for several months now and what I have observed is that Olu Gordon seems to take pride in liberally printing the word ‘bitch’ without realizing that by so doing, he demeans himself and his paper," the diplomat said adding that he read with contempt a recent attack piece by Olu Gordon which accused other people of not being journalists but which portrayed Gordon as a journalist.
"Does this Olu Gordon man even understand the sanctity of journalism or the respect that goes with the description of journalist?" the diplomat pondered, adding that as far as he was concerned, "Gordon is just an embarrassment to local journalism in Sierra Leone."
The Editorial staff of Awareness Times however explained to the Western Diplomat that, like most sane people in the country, we usually ignore Olu Gordon’s attacks on our Publisher because "everyone in Sierra Leone knows his antecedents and so he is more pitied than damned".
Awareness Times staff also explained to the diplomat that this newspaper’s December 2006 publication of two interesting ballads by a reader of Awareness Times (Shackles 1975) strangely and inexplicably affected Olu Gordon’s mindset leading to him publicly taking upon himself the self-identification of the sad and deranged person being described in the Ballads.
"How can any sane person read those Ballads about such a sad, filthy and morally deranged guttersnipe and proceed to shout to the world that the person described therein must be no other person than himself?" the question was posed to the respectable foreign diplomat.
Meanwhile, the Ballads in question that Olu Gordon has taken upon himself to accuse of containing materials about him and his antecedents, have been reproduced on Page 10 of this edition of Awareness Times. They can also be found on our Internet Website where they have been providing material for researchers of Ballads since December 2006.
