A non-profit making organization, the Melvine Edith Patricia Stuart Trust (MEPS)/Well Woman Clinic on Saturday October 25 2008 commemorated the Breast Cancer Month by organizing a ‘charity walk’ that starts from the National Stadium to the Central Business District of PZ.

The procession was aimed at raising awareness among women about the need for preventive health care and regular cancer screenings.

Giving a background of the organization, Project Director, Mrs. Jennifer Renner Thomas says MEPS is a registered not-for-profit making organization established in 1976 by the late Melvin Patricia Staurt.

“Melvin Patricia Staurt established this Trust during her ten year struggle with breast cancer pri
or to her death in March 1981,” she disclosed, while adding that the mission of the organization is to work in partnership with the government and communities to promote good health among women in Sierra Leone and to reduce the incidence of deaths by cancer through regular screening programmes.

Chairman of the Managing Committee of the Well Woman Clinic, Dr. John Mbonu commended all those who joined force with them to undertake the long awareness raising walk, while adding that it is a very unfortunate fact that Sierra Leone doesn’t have reliable statistics on breast cancer.

He added that it is evident that the disease is taking an upward trend, stating that for every five women who visit the Well Woman Clinic, one has breast abnormality.

“40% of these women with breast abnormalities are diagnosed with breast cancer,” he noted, while calling on the public to put hands on deck in the fight against the scourge through early detection and prevention.

He used the opportunity to thank the Pink Charity Foundation for donating to the clinic a Mammogram and an ultra modern sound machine plus 2 powerful diagnostic machines.

Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Mr. Kisiro Sheku Dawo commended the organizers for such a wonderful initiative, while adding that the organizers are indeed complementing government’s effort in the fight against diseases, especially breast cancer.

He assured the organizers of government’s commitment and support in order to reduce breast cancer to it minimal in the country, while adding that the walk really served it intended purpose.
