Wanza Agreement To Go To Parliament 


Sierra Leone
People’s Party Member of Parliament, Hon. Philip Tetema Tondoneh is said to have recommended that the Wanza agreement be brought before the House for a review. “Since it is parliament that approves the national annual budget, it is the duty of the Honourable House to also monitor such expenditures in order to ensure that public funds are utilized judiciously,” the MP said. He reportedly stated that the agreement was of international flavour which made it more mandatory that it should be brought before the House.


Mineral Rights Review Commences


In collaboration with the Presidential Task Force, OSIWA, Christian Aid and other stakeholders in the mining sector, the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources is said to have commenced the review of all mining rights on core mineral policy to benefit the people of Sierra Leone. The overriding objective of the review is for minerals to provide optimal benefits to the country so as to generate a stream of benefits to succeeding gen
erations. The review will also ensure that the laws and regulations governing the mineral industry in Sierra Leone are fair, balanced and unambiguous.


Windfall For 50 Educational Institutions


Reports have it that the Sierra Leone Library Board past Thursday donated sciences and children’s text books to fifty (50) educational institutions across the country.  Reports say the donation was made possible by Children’s International in the United States of America, which came into fruition as a result of an earlier request made by the Chief Liberian of the Sierra Leone Library Board at a workshop held last year in the United Kingdom.

 


President Koroma Verified


President Ernest Bai Koroma has been officially verified as a legitimate public servant on government payroll, thus qualifying him to be earning salary under the Government of Sierra Leone. According to reports, the verification was recently done at State House by officials from the Public Reform Unit. Head of the Verification Team, Julius Sandy is reported as saying that their duty was to ascertain the veracity of the President as a member of the civil/public service being paid from government coffers. The president was reportedly subjected to interviewing, photographing and fingerprinting.

 

Health Ministry Trains 25 Community Nurses


In collaboration with Sight Savers, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has trained 25 Peripheral Health Unit Workers in Kenema District, local tabloids say. The purpose of the training was to capacitate the workers to be able to integrate primary eye care services into primary health care project. Cataract Surgeon attached to the Kenema Government Hospital, Lansana Sheriff is reported as saying that the participants were expected to recognize and refer major eye care problems to the secondary eye care stations. He said the intervention of sight savers is in conformity with the vision 20/20 which is to make sure that unnecessary blindness are eliminated in all categories.

 

69 Youths Trained on Civic Engagement


The Global Rescue Mission with funding from the British High Commission Sierra Leone has reportedly organized two days training in enhancement of civil society monitoring and civic engagement for 69 youths from various civil society organizations at a ceremony held at the Kenema Youths Sports Club. The aim of the training was to enhance the capacity to promote civic engagement and grassroot monitoring in their target areas in post conflict Sierra Leone.
