As the spate of violence and intimidation in the country persist, National Commission for Democracy (NCD) in collaboration with other peace building institutions have formed an umbrella body called Moral Guarantors for Tolerance, Violence and Democracy in a bid to combat the recurrence of violence and unrest.
This was disclosed during a press briefing held on Tuesday 28th October 2008 at the Independent Media Commission’s (IMC) Kissy House Office in Freetown.
Chairman of the National Commission for Democracy, Mr. George Coleridge Taylor said the body is charged with the responsibility to investigate and remedy all forms of intimidation and violence in the country.
"It will also help in the promotion of tolerance as it will serve as mediator in order to ensure national cohesion," he maintained, while adding that the group will engage all stakeholders in promoting sustainable democracy and development.
Mr. Taylor said the group will engage bilateral and multilateral partners with the view to supporting the initiatives of promoting tolerance, peace building and democracy in Sierra Leone, adding that it will monitor, evaluate and report on the state of tolerance, non violence, peace and democracy nation wide.
Chairperson of the Group, Mrs. Agnes Taylor Lewis said the group will serve as investigator of incidences and report to the relevant authorities for an amicable resolution.
"We take cognizance of the fact that other organizations operate in like field," she noted, while adding that the country is rapidly growing thus the need to remove the country from the system of compact mentality of activities and responsibilities for its development.
