Energy and Power Minister, Haja Afsatu Olayinka Kabba has recently outlined the prospects and challenges of the energy and power sector during the last one year.

Speaking on the provision of electricity to Freetown and its surroundings, Haja Afsatu Kabba said her ministry unleashed an ambitious programme to address the emergency phase for the provision of electricity in Freetown.

"The focus was to achieve President Koroma’s proclaimed deadline of December 20, 2008 and also to address the short, medium and long term challenges of the sector," the minister told journalists last Thursday during the weekly government press briefing at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Information and Communication, Youyi Building in Freetown.

"A Result Based Framework Master Plan for Energy and Power Sector was developed for implementation over 36 months," she disclosed, adding that this step was in line with His Excellency’s Performance Tracking and Management Contract of 2008.

The minister authoritatively pointed out that the December 20 deadline was achieved on target and Sierra Leone was declassified and no more called the country with the darkest city in the world.

"That day was an historic moment in our country, the delivery for the power plants for Blackhall Road started on the 12th of December when Income Electrix airfreighted the first power plant to Lungi Airport and transported it to Blackhall Road on the 18th of December 2007," she explained.

The Energy and Power Minister further explained that the Global Trading Group plants arrived in Freetown and were transported to Kingtom amidst jubilations by the people.

She adds that the President commissioned the power plants as he promised.

"Under the energy emergency programme improved electricity is being supplied to Freetown and its surroundings representing a significant peace dividend for the population," she noted, adding: "the contribution made by the Task Force over the emergency period, translated into significant impacts in support of my ministry’s effort towards actualizing H.E’s vision."

She pointed out that two key products were delivered by the Task Force which includes the Energy Strategic Plan Framework and the Energy Policy Review and Development Guidelines.

"Additionally the strategic planning advice provided by the Chairman culminated in the implementation of the Emergency Rehabilitation of the Transmission and Distribution Network in Freetown and a loss prevention programme," she maintained, while adding that these initiatives contributed significantly to measures for improving the energy sector performance.
