Awareness Times can now authoritatively confirm that a five year old girl, Sarah Kamara was seriously wounded during the School Boys versus Police fracas at Kingtom last week. It is not clear which of the factions (Boy Blues or School Boys) hurt the young child with a missile (suspected to be a stone) that landed on her face whilst she was playing on the verandah of her house. However, the Police are alleging the St. Edwards School boys to be the culprits.

Additionally, it has now been revealed by the Sierra Leone police that one Marie Kamara of King tom has miscarried her young pregnancy due to merciless beating she was alleged to have received from irate students during last weeks riot at King tom.

Windows of one of the damaged Living Quarters at Kingtom Barracks

This was authoritatively disclosed by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Professional Standards, SIS Koroma at the usual weekly police press conference at Police Headquarters past Tuesday 18th November, 2008.

It could be recalled that some time last week, students of the St. Edwards Secondary School clashed with personnel of the SLP resident at the King Tom Barracks that resulted in the destruction of properties worth millions of leones on both sides. It all started when a police officer reportedly manhandled a pupil of the school for what was referred to as an act of indiscipline on the part of a student who was seen and heard using invectives on a passing lass. Even with the intervention of teachers, the situation was said to have been uncontrollable as more beatings ensued for the intervening teacher.

This reportedly enraged the pupils who went on the rampage at the police barracks and its vicinity molesting and assaulting whosoever could be found along the way. It was at this moment that poor Marie was pounced upon by the students even as she was neither resident in the barracks nor a police relation. The alleged merciless beating of the expecting woman led to the miscarriage of her pregnancy afterwards at the hospital.

According to the AIG, another five-year-old Sarah Kamara was also struck by a stone while sitting in her veranda, but however said she was responding to treatment.

The AIG further disclosed to journalists that police constable 11549 Joseph Senesie, PC 11550 Abib Kamara and woman police constable 9553 Ramatu Cole were amongst those police officers alleged to have been beaten up by the students.

The AIG admitted that though they never fired a shot, they however released teargas to dispatch the pupils.

He ended by disclosing that a joint committee comprising members of the civil society SLTU, NUSS, the Ministry of Education, St Edwards Board of Governors and other stake holders have been set up to identify the cause of the riot.
