Teenage Girls Mostly Affected By STIs

Research carried out by Rural College of Tropical Medicines in Makeni has reportedly revealed that 80% of girls between the ages of 14 to 15 are suffering from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) in the country. This category of people need urgent medical attention from government, the research says. As reported, this rural collage of Tropical Medicine deals in traditional herb and it needs help from the Chinese to work as one since they are also traditional healers. The research was also aimed at reducing the spread of diseases like malaria and typhoid among others.

Bumbuna Project Faces Another Chaos

Reports say the Bumbuna Project Affected People (BPAP) on Monday this week staged another protest to call the attention of government for their benefits due them for resettlement as earlier promised. The affected community members reportedly stormed the premises of the paramount chief demanding why the resettlement office has been abruptly closed down without meeting their demands as promised. Pure pipe borne water, health care facilities and good road network issues have never been put on track, the report continues. Elders who witnessed the impasses promised to relay their message to the appropriate authorities.

Sexual Violence Impedes Girl Child Education

The Country Director of Plan has reportedly made a public disclosure that sexual violence is one of the major causes that stops the girl child from going to school. He is quoted as saying that parents sometimes force their girl children into early and forced sexual relationship that keeps them out of school. He reportedly said that these victims sometimes suffer from sexually transmitted infections. A campaign will reportedly be launched today against sexual violence for children in schools.

Connaught Hospital Gets Le30 Million Drugs & Equipment

The German based director of Elizabeth Agricultural Farmers Association (EAFA) Debali Konteh is reported to have donated drugs to the Connaught Hospital valued about Le30m. The donation was reportedly made through the Honorary Consul of Germany Sierra Leone. The director is said to have explained that this is not the first donation the association has made to the hospital. Acting Connaught Hospital Care Manager, Dr. Dumbuya Kamara expressed delight to receive the drugs and equipment that will go a long way in the fight against chronic shortage of supplies for patients.

Boost For Technology Agriculture

Reports have it that a non profit making female firm called Talk With Us (TWU), specialized in information technology, agriculture, environment and biomedical is presently in the country to assist farmers. The firms president, Alexis Muse is reported as saying that in 2001 they were approached to come to Sierra Leone to help in the area of infrastructure and agriculture. "Our coming was to find solution for poaching and provide surveillance equipment for our coastal waters, for which consultations have been made with line ministries," she pointed out. She is reported as saying that they will assist by providing tools for farmers and education to enable them compete in the global market, as a way of alleviating their problems.

Salone to Get National Health Commission

The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Soccoh Kabia is reported as saying that actions taken by Government to establish a National Health Service Commission. He stated that the commission would be formed to address the problem of absorption, promotion and improved condition of service for health personnel in the country. He is reported as saying that the move is to address the problem of brain drain in medical profession.
