Sierra Leone University Colleges to Contest in Zain African Quiz

Fourah Bay College (FBC) and Njala University are to take part in the Zain African Challenge International Championship that is scheduled for February 14-22, 2009 in Uganda, Kampala.

Zain African Challenge is an academic quiz programme for universities in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

According to the executive producer of Zain African Challenge, Richard Reid, the two universities, Njala and FBC would have to send a team each comprising of three students and a coach and one liaison officer.

He said a tryout testing would be conducted to determine which students to be invited to participate in the scholars club practice sessions.

Richard Reid disclosed that about 32 universities in all will take part in the competition. He added that enrolled universities would compete at the National qualifying tournaments and that the top teams for each national qualifying tournament will advance to the international championship festival.

The executive producer revealed that the university which emerges as the champion of the international championship festival would receive U$ 50,000 and each participant of the team would receive $5,000, while the runner-up would receive a grant of $35,000 and $2,500 for the participants.

Reid disclosed also that there is also "cap" on cash prize awards of $1000 and educational materials and supplies such as Laptop computers, mobile phones among others.

He stated that questions in the quiz programme would be based on a wide range of topics including geography, history, science, arts and culture and literature among others.

He also pointed out that the inter university battle for brain competition is to recognize the achievement of students who could be nurtured, adding that the competition is a demonstration of Zains commitment to promoting education in African.

He concluded by saying that a training workshop would be conducted in Nigeria for Coaches of the university teams.
