In Sierra Leone,Karim-Sei Tops SLAJ Debate

Take aside the rhetoric and the debasing manner in which the other two candidates were busy heaping insults on themselves in public and what was clear to all independent listeners of last Saturdays SLAJ Presidential Debate was that Ibrahim Karim Sei, the brains behind the running of the SLAJ Secretariat over the last four years is definitely the most matured and focused person to lead SLAJ of the three current aspirants.

Whilst Philip Neville and Umaru Fofana reduced the debate to sheer pettiness (eg: who did or did not go to beg at the Chinese Embassy for a scholarship), Karim Sei was the epitome of maturity with concise and focused answers borne out of his years of experience as an executive member of SLAJ.

By the end of the debate, many of the undecided members of SLAJ here in Freetown, who spoke to this writer, were expressing their solid conviction that the quiet and humble Ibrahim Karim Sei was definitely the best man to lead the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) at this point in time. Quite a number of those who had been leaning towards Umaru Fofana also told this writer that Umarus choice of a role model in journalism to be Olu Gordon of Peep! was clearly a turn-off for anyone seeking a clean slate SLAJ with no baggage of indecency.

"This is the turning point to make or break SLAJ in the eyes of the wider public. We need matured leadership at this point in time. Not someone who endorses indecency and made-up stories which would mortgage the credibility of the profession. We also want someone who has proven by his actions that he sticks through thick and thin as long as it is in the interest of reporters. Not someone who will just resign and abandon us when the going gets rough," said Mr. Aruna Kamara, the President of the Reporters Union in Southern Bo.
