Tombo Youths Dump Education for Fishing

Many youngsters of school going age have reportedly abandoned schooling to engage in full fishing activities in Tombo village. The reason for this sad development is not unconnected with abject poverty and the pressure on those young men to take the role of bread winners in their families. This has reportedly warranted village elders to request the intervention of appropriate authorities to prevail on the young boys to go back to school.

Mammy en Pikin Well body Week Kicks off

In collaboration with UNs child friendly organization, UNICEF the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has commenced a week long free tetanus and worm treatment for women between ages 15 to 49 years, including pregnant women and children under age five at various community health centres across the country. It commenced on Saturday, 22nd November, to end on Saturday 29th. It is expected that pregnant women as well as lactating mothers will turn out in their numbers to receive free treatment for themselves and children.

More Strike Threats for APC Govt

It is reported that the National Union of Polytechniques lecturers has issued a 21 day strike notice to the APC government for what they allege to be a gross insensitivity to the plight of lecturers since they assumed office in 2007. If what the reports allege are anything to buy, it will add more insult to injury for government as already both junior and senior workers of F.B.C are on strike owning to lack of payment due them, creating embarrassment for the educational sector. The notice according to reports came when many consultative meetings to address their issues failed.

SLAJ Goes to High Court

Mr. Theo Nicol, the disqualified candidate in the November 29 2008 election of the Sierra Leone association of journalists (SLAJ) has reportedly taken the out going secretary general, Ibrahim Karim-Sei and the chief electoral commissioner of the association to court to seek an injunction for his disqualification for vice presidency. Mr. Swarray one of the contending candidates for this position rejected Mr. Nicol on grounds that he must be an active member for 3 years prior to election. It is this claim that Mr. Nicol challenged in court, saying he registered with he association since in the eighties, though he was out of the country.

FSSG overcharges Poor Parents

Authorities of the Freetown Secondary School for Girls are requesting heavily from parents, as reported. Reports say that pupils who opted for that senior school in BECE are forced to first pay for school colours-felt hat, hat band, tie and belt before the payment of fees. The bursar reportedly coerces parents to pay for those items even where the pupils might have had in JSS before accepting payment from them. This has reported infuriated parents who seek the principals mercy in vain. They say at least for some of them whose children have been enrolled in the school in JSS, it is a mere transition process that does not warrant fresh purchases. They now reportedly ask for the intervention of government.

Zain Boosts Eastern School

Three classroom structures constructed by Zain funds has been handed over by Zain CEO Dr. Saad Barrack as reportedly. Reports say less privilege schools also received text books worth millions of leones under the same programme. Reports say Zain is aware of it social responsibility towards education and that is why they are supporting education. Report further revealed that this is the first time in history for the school to receive tis kind of donation. The community also requested for a transmission most at the town as reported.

Doctor Closes Down Chinese Hospital In Kailahun

Dr. Santigie Kamara has reportedly closed town a registered Chinese hospital and other medical services in the Kailahun District. Reports have revealed that the District Health Officer and other health practioners are afraid of competition in the district. The chiefdom speaker has reportedly said that such action was to allow them continue selling drugs at exorbitant costs to exploit the people. The chief was reportedly asking for the intervention of appropriate authorities. However, the doctor is said to have denied the allegation, saying that the Chinese doctor was without a qualification and does not speak English.
